Shnate McDuanus
Music does things to me emotionally. Some stuff makes me feel like putting everything on hold and having a good time, some stuff makes me cry at the sight of remarkable beauty, some stuff makes me feel good when I feel lousy, and some stuff reminds me of simpler days. The Grateful Dead have been and still are one of my biggest influences and inspirations. Before anything else I knew or understood musically, there was the Dead. My father used to play their albums in the house and in the car, and before I knew who they were, I knew I loved their music. "Brown Eyed Women," "Dark Star," "Box of Rain" and "Tennessee Jed" accompany many fond memories of my youth. I had been doing a lot of soul searching, been "down in the dumps" recently and trying to figure out what exactly it is that still "does it" for me. Apparently the Dead still "do it" for me, big time. I rarely talk about them because it seems like it's something that so few people get, and that so few people choose to respect. In my experience, people like to poke fun at the band's fans, and for a while I've been scared of being associated in public with that type of lifestyle. But I guess when I took everything else away I realized that, out of everything else (even the talented and exciting Rory Gallagher,) the Dead are probably my favorite band/institution/lifestyle/what-have-you. I still always find something new when I listen to them, even with old recordings that I've heard 300+ times. I guess, if nothing else, this goes to show the incredible effects that music can have on an individual. But I think that's something we're all familiar with. freak show
I know what you mean: There really is a stigma attached to liking the Grateful Dead. I never fit into the beads, tie dyes, and sandals-category, and most of the music I enjoy is quite a bit more "aggressive", but the Dead are a great band. Excellent musicians, wonderful lyrics. I've found however that I can only listen to them when the weather is warm and pleasant. For me their songs are "sunny", and I guess I want the surroundings to reflect the music... Honestly, some songs make me tear up a lot. Many times they are the simpler yet most beautiful of them. Something about slow piano playing just gets me. Like this one also Cowgirl in the Sand (Live at Massey Hall 1971) does that to me Like you said some make me want to stop everything. The Band tends to have said effect on me. Older times. I love the use of a broom in the background on this one.
