yoda
I'm buying a '01 SG special from a friend. He replaced the 490r and 490t pickups with a seymour JB and a Seymour '59. The 490's are packed along with the guitar. I was looking at them and there does not seem to be a way to tell the difference between them visually, is there a way to tell the difference between them electrically? I might use them in another guitar.
NeoConMan
Measure resistance across the leads with an ohm meter. Also, the pole spacing is ever-so-slightly wider for the bridge pickup. I'll find a chart and post it to tell ya the differences in output.

NeoConMan
Go to this web page; http://www.gibson.com/en-us/Divisions/Gibson%20Gear/Pickups/How%20They_re%20Made%20%281%29/ ... and you'll find this chart of comparative output. Duncan (and other big-name pickups) are usually pretty damned hot compared to Gibson. 59, not so much, but the JB is a sizzler - relatively speaking. Somewhere on the Seymour Duncan site they should list their outputs. Under 10k ohms is more of a traditional Classic Rock/Vintage thing, the lower the better for my taste. Over 10k starts getting into the shrill "metal" end of things.
Nick Beach
Which ever pup has higher resistance will be the neck pup.
NeoConMan
Hmmmm.... No, I would not say that's the case.
DiamondJig
you might be able to tell by the length of the lead wires comming off the pickups, the longer one would be for the neck since it have to travel a longer distance to reach the pots
