That may be, but as you know zombywoof there's a reason why refin's are frowned upon in addition to the loss of cosmetic authenticity. A top thinned too much by sanding (and it's not hard to do that, in fact, almost inevitable that you'll thin it at least a bit) will not have anything like the original tone.
