New (to me) Casino

Hello,

I've searched the forum and the web to try to find a little more info on Epiphone Casinos. I just purchased a used one today. The owner said it was an 87, but I'm sure now that isn't the case. It is in great shape and came with a nice hardshell case. I was hoping it was one of the 80's era Japanese made models. When I went to look at it, I knew it wasn't but it was in such good shape and seems to play well. The tag inside is orange, it says Casino CH below that is the serial number

R96H01xx (there aren't x's there but I didn't know if it was a good idea to post serial numbers completely) - Anyway any help in dating it, country of manufacture. Either way I'm happy. I paid $240.

- Thanks for any info. I will post pictures if anyone is interested. It is the red colored one with white pick guard.

I'll post pics tonight, it is red but you can see the woodgrain through the finish. Nice looking guitar really. I was on a budget, so I bought a small Line 6 Spider amp the 15 watt model to plug it into. The pickup switch is a little flaky, but everything works.

$240 for a Korea-made Casino is a hell of a good deal for a pretty good guitar. You have nothing to complain about. I'll take a guess here and say your serial number reads something R 96 -Alpha character- four digit number..this would mean yours was made in Korea by Peerless (most were at this juncture) which are pretty decent impressions of the original Kalamazoo Casinos. The earlier Japanese-made (Matsumoku (1975-1986)and Terada (1987-1998 and as Epiphone Elitists 1998-2008) both made them) are really good guitars too but at the end of the day you have to realize that in its conception the ES-330 (the Gibson version of the Epiphone Casino) was created to replace a lower-end entry level arch top, the Gibson ES-225 so the Casino and ES-330s were never really high-end instruments with a lot of complicated production procedures so they aren't really difficult to inexpensively re-create today while remaining close in spec to the originals. I own a '96 Terada-made and a '65 Kalamazoo-made and the differences are apparent but not obvious and the Korean versions aren't that far removed from those...I can't absolutely say about the newer Chinese-made ones because I don't consider anything made in China but my money says you have a better guitar than if you had bought a new Chinese-made one. Nice score. Good luck...one question...did you once play on a line with Igor Larionov and Vladmir Krutov? lol...nevermind...I'm just fixated on hockey lol.

Duh...I see you posted the serial number in your original post...yes, it was made by Peerless in August of 1996 which makes it a pretty good... damned good.. score for $240 The "CH" after Casino means "Cherry" the color.
