how do u tune a 12 string?

yes they are traditionally..... but don't like the tone of bar chords beyong the 5th fret... I like keeping the g-string in unison

 

The one course that seems to ring out above all others is the g string with the octave string. That's the theory behind the Martin McGuinn 7 string guitar. He can get most of the sound of the 12 from having all strings single and adding the octave on the G string. IMO I think you are missing out on some of the best sounds of a 12 by putting the G in unison. If you have tuning problems, take it to a good tech and he can make adjustments at the bridge or nut to put that octave G where it needs to be.

ok, i restrung her last night to standard and what bear that was. i plan to check tuning tonight. It really sounds good, different from what i expected. i went with d'addarrio coated. the colored ball ends really help sort out the madness.
