Loosen the strings?

As long as you're stroing it in a case, in a place where the temperature and humidity won't change too drastically, it's not necessary to loosen the strings. Loosening the strings is a practice that's more important (especially for acoustics) when shipping or when storing somewhere that's not temperature-regulated (like some basements, attics, or storage units). It's done so the expansion and contraction of the wood won't over-stress the neck and bridge due to string tension.

If it's just in a closet in your house or under your bed, it should be fine.

I think that a seasoned guitar suffers less from environmental effects. My Gibson Les Paul varied widely in the first year with the changing of the seasons. I had to readjust the truss rod when the humidity and temperature changed. After a couple of years, it stabilized and I haven't had to do a truss rod adjustment since. When it was new, it would go from standard string height to almost nothing in cold weather and I would have to loosen the truss rod to add some relief to get the strings off the frets.

I always wondered if that was because of the breathing aspect of the nitro finish. Poly seals in the moisture levels a little better, I guess. I didn't have that problem with my Epis.

Ron G,

When I say justify what I mean is I'd rather make mistakes that might cause permanent damage to a guitar that isn't as sentimental to me. My wife bought the JL for me in 2004 and paid, I'm embarrased to say, $2500 for it.

The guitar that was sent to me though was a used/returned JL. I hit the friggin' ceiling when I realized that she had paid for a new guitar and music123.com had sent used one. In my former line of work this is known as a deceptive trade practice, or straight up fraud. Needless to say I called music123.com and was told not to worry. The warranty and all the "case candy" weren't that important and the guitar would be just fine. If there were any problems they would fix it without having to bother Epiphone.

When I let them know how unhappy, shall we say, I was they put me right through to a manager. The issue was resolved but my wife was still pretty upset. So I'd rather bang around on another guitar to learn and then once I have figured out not to eat McDonalds french fries then play my $2500 Casino and ruin the XXXX I don't even know what to put here. That is what I mean when I say justify. Now I can go back to playing my "don't drink to much Cabernet while surfing ebay" Riviera!

But I do know what you mean.

Mac, you're not going to ruin it unless you drop it. I still say, "PLAY IT!!!"
