modula
Got a new LH dot last week and having just my amp back from the shop, I have noticed an odd problem. With all 4 pots set to 10, the bridge, neck and middle position pickups are all sounding fine. When I have the selector switch set to middle position, if I turn either volume pot to zero, the entire sound is cut, not just the feed from that pickup. I want to check that this is not some weird design feature dots before I go through the hassle of sending it back to the shop (the shop is about 150 miles from me!) - anyone know anything about this please? I'm assuming something has gone wrong with the wiring, but it seems odd that middle position works ok with volumes up. I know that my old Epi Les Paul copy does not do this - both volumes have to be zero for the middle position signal to cut out completely. Little help please! modula
Ooops, seems I've forgotten how to type in complete sentences today - apologies, I have let the english language down. You'll get the drift though
Jimbotime
Interesting observation! Just checked mine. It DOES in fact cut the sound if one pot is all the way off. If you bring the pots up a tick, you can blend both pups. Never noticed that before. Either both of our guitars are wrong, or both are right. I'm guessing they're OK. I'm thinking this is a good setup. When you break between sets, you just have to roll one off to kill the guitar. You can keep your basic settings. Even if this wiring is "Wrong", I'm keeping it. modula
Bizarre, but at least I'm not alone. Cheers for letting me know Jimbotime. If anyone else notices anything different it would be massively appreciated.
Bender 4 Life
Its a "master volume" design feature that is common in almost all post '50s Gibsons & Epis. It CAN be re-wired for "individual usage" middle position volume pots.........(called "50's wiring scheme)
modula
Brilliant, thank you very much. Never come across it before but at least I don't have to send it back now! Cheers

New lesson learned! Sheila
Musicfox
I noticed this one volume with center switch position wiring scheme recently with the acquisition of my New Dot. The pots are kinda cheap however I think because they do little volume adjustment until almost off then a quick volume reduction, not linear and not useful. I will be doing a rewire kit for this guitar and MAY address that wiring scheme at that time. Yay or Nay 50's wiring. Search function Pot wiring will get you more info here already. brianh
That's the same PUP wiring on my IBJL Casino. I kind of threw me too, but that's they way they were done originally, I'm guessing. I don't really like it, but it does turn your pickup selector into a kill switch with only one vol pot turned up. In any case, it's an easy wiring change if you don't mind working through f-holes...
