oldtimer1281734191
Just purchased a used Dot. The volumes when both pickups are on is different than my Epi LP Standard. When I turn either the bridge or the neck pickup down the volume of both pickups are lowered. The LP Standard pups are totally independent of one another when in combination. Are other Dots setup this way? I think it is a 2002 Korean model.
sjtalon
I can't say for sure what the pot values are, but here's some wiring that should be close: Dot Studio: http://www.gibson.com/Files/schematics/Dot%20Studio%20wiring.pdf or: http://www.gibson.com/Files/schematics/sheratonII%20wiring.JPG
Elias Graves
I experienced that with a old SG Special II. I never did figure why it did that. The problem went away when I gutted it and rewired it. Kind of drastic, I guess, but it worked. Good luck. EG

I guess I could check out a simlar4 model at GC. I doubt if I will rewire it, unless there seems to be a problem with the pots, or a short. Individually the pups and pots work fine. Mine, like the Sheraton has 2 each. The diagram looks like the Sheraton pups are wired separately. If these guitars are wired the same, It may be the pickup switch on mine is defective. I was just looking for someone to confirm if other Dot VS guitars volume controls are like the LP or not.
sjtalon
Oh, I didn't even look at the dot one. You could try spraying them out with contact cleaner, sometimes they can act goofy if they are dirty. My son-in-law had a Dot once and I don't remember that it worked like you are describing ( strangely) or I think I would have noticed. I have an Epi Casino, and a Gibson LP, had a Epi LP too, and they all work like what I would call "normal". Id est, separate volume control while in the middle switch position. That is, when the pickup switch is in the middle, and either one of the volume knobs are turned to zero, the volume of both are totally off. There is blending control with either vol knob until about 2, then the sound is off. I have had the LP Standard since 2006 and did not notice this. Have you checked if any of yours zeros with only one knob?
Strumbone
My Sherri's original parts were wired like this...it's normal. When I replaced everything on mine, that didn't change. When I say everything, I mean every part that physically touched a string (tuners, nut, bridge, and tailpiece), and every part in signal chain (pups, switch, jack, and pots) was upgraded. Yes, if both pups are selected and either volume is turned off...no sound. They can be wired differently, but I chose to keep it the same. YMMV. I can see that this way can have advantages, like killing the sound quickly with one turn. At first I thought that the balance between the pups could not be tweaked, but after careful listening, I could hear the gradual change allowed. I figured if the balance was fixed as in Strats, there would be no point in having the 2 knobs. So I wondered if something was wired wrongly. Bender 4 Life
Sounds like your Dot has "Modern" wiring.........independant volumes, with either acting as a master volume. Your LP sounds like "50's" wiring...........totally independant volume knobs. It's normal.
