Chappy
Can someone please tell me the difference between the PUPs in a Special II and an ES 335. They look different. I have an Epiphone Special II with two black humbuckers. 700 and 600? I am thinking of getting an Epi ES 335 for the hollow body and assuming better components. I can't find that info anywhere. So, I'm asking for some help.
animalfarm
It's an easy answer for HALF the question, a bit harder for the second part. An Epi LP Special II comes with - Bridge - 700T Black Open Coil, Ceramic 8 magnet, 16.6Kohms Neck - 650R Black Open Coil, Ceramic 8 magnet, 12.8Kohms Now the harder part - The Epiphone Elitist 1963 ES-335 Dot Electric Guitar has been Discontinued. Will you be buying Used? http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/Epiphone-Elitist-1963-ES335-Dot-Electric-Guitar?sku=518419&src=3WWRWXGB&ZYXSEM=0&gclid=CPzK7Iu-iaMCFQlX2godzB8AbA The pups for it are: Bridge - 50ST USA Chrome humbucker pickup, Alnico V magnet, 8.5Kohms??? Neck - 50SR USA Chrome humbucker pickup, Alnico V magnet, 8.5Kohms Link to view pup specs: http://epi.p3net.net/wiki/index.php/Epiphone_Pickups Should you be looking at NEW, here's a link. i Can Tuna Guitar
This current thread may be informative: http://forums.epiphone.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=16568 While your guitar has the ceramic magnet pickups, most Epi electrics have the Epiphone Alnico Classics (57CH), some (many Les Pauls, SGs) with the Classic Plus (HOTCH) in the bridge position. The Dot has the 57CH in both positions, in similar fashion to a Gibson 335, which has Gibson '57 Classics in both positions. Humbuckers may come covered or uncovered, an aesthetic thing. Sjael
LP Classics (I believe) and the Goth series also come with HOTHB8Bs in the bridge and HB6Ns in the neck. Not that they differ a lot from the classics. Probably the same pickup uncovered. In regards to the OP; the biggest difference between the Special-II and Elitist pickups is that the Special-II's are you-can't-sell-a-guitar-without-pickups-so-put-these-in pickups, whereas the pickups that come with Studios and upwards are actually pretty good. That said, the Special-II's pickups are a lot hotter than whatever is/was in the Elitist Dot.

If you go to page 4, you'll see the Epiphone ES-335 Dot Electric Guitar. This is the one I have GAS over. Hope this clears this up, and thanks alot, to all who answered. There should be some differences, and there is in the Details link. There is no way in hades unless I use Obama-nomics I could ever get the The Epiphone Elitist 1963 ES-335 Dot Electric Guitar. Or the Epiphone Elitist 1965 Casino.$1000 difference between the new Dot 335 and the 1963 Elitest. http://www.music123.com/Epiphone.Music123?o=2 I am in Canada and lots of stuff won't ship here, or it costs bigtime, and All you need music is in Canada. The shipping is free. All these doinks make a $412 guitar a $550 guitar. More or less, if not bought in Canada with free shipping. Also, shipped from the US, the UPS guy wants a check for the Border. I have no idea, hence the question. I do know that the Special II has the 700 and 650 as someone said. I've gotten a few different answers for the "Dot". How come, since the "Dot" sells for more than twice the price. I am not at all arguing, I just don't get it. Seems like the Gibson '57s would sound more like the original did. Not? Thanks all. When I say the Special-II's pickups are hotter, I mean they have a higher output, and are better for heavy rock/metal, if that's what you're unsure of. Hey, sjael, if your avatar is any indication, you look like a very heavy metal guy. I am more into laid back blues, like Sitting on top of the World, with a Spoonful. I am working on Sweet Home Chicago now. My problem is that I kinda killed memory. I can remember the 60s better than the last 10 years. It makes learning a lick, or anything else, really hard. I have to get the feel of a song more than just learning the TAB. Pain in the arse. So, play on, and thanks again.
brianh
Have you considered used? There are a few LPs, Dots and Casinos circulating in Montreal if you don't mind a drive: http://montreal.en.craigslist.ca/msg/1852520380.html http://montreal.en.craigslist.ca/msg/1862811457.html http://montreal.en.craigslist.ca/msg/1793747735.html http://montreal.en.craigslist.ca/msg/1796927783.html And even a vintage Sorrento: http://montreal.en.craigslist.ca/msg/1858356780.html Oops, I see that's a 4 hour drive. Nevermind...
animalfarm
Chappy - I looked in my 2008 Epi Catalog, says DOT comes with "Alnico Classic Humbuckers" in both the Bridge and Neck, same pickup, both positions. My research indicates the pups are "57CH" Humbuckers, modelled after the original Gibson '57 Classic HB. Finding this out was like trying to pull teeth - you'd think a straightforward search would yield definative results, but it didn't. Perhaps one of our DOT owners can verify? Alnico Classic Description: Vintage vibe with rich, warm tone. Magnet: Alnico-V Guitar Example: Les Paul Standard (neck), DOT Bridge and Neck D.C. Resistance: 8.5K ohm Induction @ 1KHz: 4.45H

So, I'll let ya know. I have faith it will sound awesome. And mostly I just wanted to say thanks to all for the digging it took to find out what ya did. I took a look at Gibson's site and they want $15 for the Truss Cover/Plate that is likely plastic. I found one new on Ebay for $3, and $2 shipping, so I ordered that. Make it look like it looks, or something.
