Epiphone Wilshire Pro vs Worn 66

I was at a Guitar Center in Covina yesterday, and they had a Wilshire Pro. Since I have a Wilshire Worn 66 with the minis, I figured I'd check it out. Although Epiphone advertises both as having a 1960's Slim Taper neck, the neck on the Pro felt like a baseball bat. Too big, very uncomfortable IMO. The neck on my Worn 66 is thin & slim, and is very much like the old Wishires & Olympics I've played.

Now I know some people prefer thicker necks, it's a matter of preference, but I wish Epiphone would they would be consistent. No way are these necks similiar to each othe, but both are "a 1960's SlimTaper neck profile." They seem to use that as a marketing catch phrase rather than a way of accurately describing the product.

BTW, both are nice guitars, the Worn 66 is made in Indonesia and the the Pro was made in China.

I was wondering about that.

I'm curious, because I had a Chinese Casino with a neck like a '50s Les Paul on steroids. I also had a Chinese G-400 with a very chunky neck.

There seems to be more difference on that guitars than just the PuPs

Yes, the Pro has block inlays (more like a Crestwood than a Wilshire), the finish, the Pro has the TV knobs like the vintage ones, push/pull knobs for single coil...

My intent was not necessary a comparison of features, but just to point out the necks are totally different despite the fact that Epiphone calls them both 1960's Slim Taper necks. It makes it difficult to order something on line, because you can't trust their descriptions.

I think what alot of people don't realize is that the magnetic field from pickups actually dampen the strings vibrations.

The bigger the pickup - the bigger the magnets - the greater the deadening affect.

That's why I prefer mini-humbuckers, me and effin Johnny Winter!

My amps got plenty-o-gain to make up any difference in output level.

Well said, my two favorite pickups are minis & P-90s. I'm glad they finally reissued the Wilshire with the proper pups.

I know it's down to personal choice, and I respect that, but I don't really see the point of the Wilshire with full size HB's, you might just as well buy an SG. I would like those control knobs from the pro model for my model though.
