Wishire Limited Edition Custom Shop?

Hey All,

I just had a Wishire scream at me at a local shop and demand that I take it home. It's the Epi Wilshire we know & love but it isn't the usual faded finish that I have seen on all the others I have run across. It's a gloss cherry red and on the back of the headstock it has "Limited Edition Custom Shop". I have not seen anything like it anywhere else locally and can't find anything on it that is helpful here on the web.

Any info anyone could provide would be most appreciated.

Thanks ahead of time!

Here are some links. I checked it out on the web quite some time ago and I was very intrigued. I love the overall look of the guitar and the bat wing headstock. Then one showed up at my local guitar shop. After checking it out I figured my money would be better spent on something else. I didn't like the feel of it. Just my opinion.

I read about these new Wilshires here a while back but I hadn't seen one until last weekend. As I already have the 66 reissue I was quite eager to try it out. To me it felt like a completely different guitar, in particular the neck shape felt bulkier. I wasn't too keen on it, frankly I prefer the mini hums,a Wilshire with full size is just a different shaped SG to me, but a friend I was with said he preferred it to mine and it was nicely made and finished. I guess, like everything, it depends on what feels good to you and at least Epiphone are offering a choice.

Ok now I am really confused...there appear to be two types of pick guards? On my guitar I have the more "swoopy" j-shaped guard vs. what appears to be more of an "H" shaped guard. In checking the links above I think, and I may be way wrong here but the "H" type guard is on the super expensive Gibsons and the "J" shaped guard on the significantly cheaper Epiphone...which is no big deal to me. The Epi just worked for me when I pulled it off the wall and thats why it went home with me.

In looking @ the the links I still don't see anything describing the guitar I have that's a "Limited edition custom shop" from Epiphone. Perhaps it would be of some help if I mentioned the Epi had been on the wall for quite sometime since the pick guard had already begun to fade, meaning maybe Epiphone only did a few of them? I'm just trying to nail down what breed of guitar my little Epiphone is.

So call me still confused on the whole Limited Custom thing... [confused]

Yes, the "J-pickguard" is found on the 1966 Epiphone Wilshire, and the "H-pickguard" is found on the American-made 1962 Epiphone Wilshire.

As for the Stamp on the back, it is not a real Custom Shop. Epiphone uses the term for guitars with a different finish/pickguard/etc.

The Wilshire's been issued 4 times in about the last 4-5 years. First there was a model with the "J" shaped pickguard full size humbuckers and block inlays. Second was the really expensive USA made model with the "H" shaped guard, soapbars and a symetrical body shape. Third was the '66 re-issue with the "J" shaped guard, dot inlays, mini humbuckers and the worn/faded finishes, and the fourth and most recent model is the Wilshire Pro which has the "J" shaped guard, humbuckers, block inlays and comes in a large number of gloss finish colours. If yours looks like it has been hanging around for a while and has full size humbuckers then it's probably from the first series as the latest "Pro" series are only a couple of months old.
