medium gauge strings on a '49 J-45?

Greetings. I have been using light gauge strings on my light weight, lightly braced 40's J-45, thinking I would put the top and bridge at some risk with mediums. Just brought home another vintage Gibson jumbo that is strung with mediums and want a fair comparison. Do you guys think I'm OK with mediums? Thanks

Hi - I also have a 49 and I use mediums. Although the guitars are light in weight, they were designed with heavier steel strings in mind (so my local vintage shop tells me.....) The mediums bring out the tone a lot over the lights, in my opinion.

I'd love to see pictures of your guitars......

Sorry to drag this one up again folks, but in the usual lack of understanding with terminology what do you guys

call "mediums" (I don't mean the spirits!!)

are you saying 13s or 12s

13s being 013 ,017 ,026 ,035 ,045 ,056

12s being .012 .016 .024 .032 .042 .053

I want to get away from the 10s my J45 has been strung with for 25 years plus.

Looking for more thump less bend!

Thanks

John

The Gibson Masterbuilt mediums are 13's. Their lights are 12's. Not sure what your 10's would be called' date=' other than way too small for a J-45.[/quote']

Thanks Mike

Yeah I know 10s are too light.

Sign of an electric guitar youth and weak fingers.

Now I will stop being "light fingered" and become (wait for it)

Heavy handed!

^^^^^

So Sorry fir that. Thanks for advice!
