Sunburst finishes: Honey? Iced Tea? Aaaaaaah!!!

Hello, everyone!

I am trying to figure out which sunburst finishes The Casino has been produced in over the course of its storied existence. Wondering if any of you could help me out.

I know, and can easily identify, "Vintage Cherry Sunburst" as the one we all know and love... the burst that graces (in two instances, graced) The Beatles' Casinos, and is offered today. But what about the so-called "Iced Tea" burst, or the "Honey" burst.... how about the "Tobacco" burst? Regarding the latter, I've seen Gibson ES-330's in Tobacco burst, but never a Casino.

It is very difficult to determine which burst you are looking at depending on the photo. Lighting, angle, etc. can often work to undermine the actual characteristics of the burst you are looking at. The images of Casinos that I have found online are all rather contradictory. One that says, "Iced Tea" looks more like "vintage cherry".... those that say, "vintage cherry" look more like "tobacco". ](*,)

Anyway, any information I can get on which bursts have been given to The Casino would be helpful. If you could direct me to a photo of said burst, that would be an added plus.

Thanks a lot!

ice tea sunburst is my faavvvooorriiitteeee mmmmmmm [thumbup]

Is that yours? Wow! What a beaut! Interesting model in that the tailpiece is more of a "Sheraton" style.

Ok, so that's a nice specimen of an Iced Tea Burst. Thanks!

I've seen pics that state "Honey Burst", but who knows if that's correct or not? I just discovered an old finish called "Royal Tan"... which looks a lot like "Honey Burst". LOL!

Ever since I saw Raymond McGinley's (Teenage Fanclub) Casino I've loved that Royal Tan finish (see first photo). I thought it was just a regular burst that had faded over the years, as with the '50s Les Pauls.

I wish they'd do it on the reissues.

I think these are all examples of Royal Tan:

Yeah, that would be cool to see the various bursts in a brand-new state. That's one of the problems with ID'ing the various burst finishes. How do you know it's not an old faded "vintage sunburst" that looks like an "Iced Tea" burst? [confused]

Funny how you included the shot of The Edge. I just saw a pic of him with his Casino, and it states that his is a "Tobacco Sunburst". That's the weirdest tobacco burst I'VE ever seen! LOL! [laugh]

here's a baccy burst casino ('83 Matsumoku)

I've never seen a honeyburst except on an LP. the elitist casino is a great example of vintage sunburst. I think any of those ice tea bursts started off as what we think of with cherry sunburst, then aged beautifully.

After looking over as many pictures and videos I can find (mainly from the Budokan concert footage, as you see both John and George's Casinos) I'm convinced George's was actually a lighter sunburst, closer to the ones posted in this thread than the sunburst current Casino models are offered in.

Wow! That's a gorgeous Tobacco Burst example. Some really cool Casinos came out of Japan. TO complicate this whole thing even more (if that's possible), I see the same (?) guitar called "Antique Burst" by this owner:

So, "Honey Burst" was never offered on the Casino? Are you certain of that? .... and "Iced Tea" is really a "cherry sunburst" aged? Hmmmmm..... [confused]

I heard someone refer to a Casino a day ago or two as being a "rare Olive Burst". LOL! WTF? I've never heard of "Olive Burst"!

Thanks for the reply and the pic!

Y'know... I have often wondered that myself. In this pic taken backstage in Germany, John's appears to have more of a darker/brownish burst edge than George's—which starts out in more of the reddish range:

... and it appears the same in this Sgt. Pepper era shot:

But, then... if you look at all three of their Casinos side-by-side in this pic, they all appear to be the same vintage burst:

I swear, it's all in the lighting and how the finish refracts it.

the "antique burst" is definitely just a tobacco burst, a specialty of the matsumoku and samick factory on epi archtops from the 80s until about 2006 when they switched to the modern yellow black bumblebee/rotten banana color scheme. the matsumoku ones are gorgeous.

as far as i know honey burst is exclusive to the LP line. someone may come out of the woodwork with an exception though, I havent come across anything.

Never heard of an olive burst epi or gibson, but perhaps they were thinking of an antigua fender coronado

To some extent, but in the last picture, John's Casino is still clearly the 3-tone sunburst (black-red-yellow), whereas Pauls is the 2-tone (black-yellow) version.

The only oddity is that George's "Royal Tan" Casino now looks quite dark around the edges.

However, if you look at a larger version of that picture:

You can clearly seen that it is strung left-handed and is, presumably, Paul's 2-tone burst Casino.

EDIT: Conformed by the repositioned strap button mod on Paul's Casino.

Wow! That was some super-sleuth work, Pumpkinhead! I'd never noticed before that this was Paul's Casino George was playing!

As for Paul's '63 being the black-yellow burst, it does appear to be so on recent pictures of him playing it:

However, compared side-by-side with Lennon's Casino, one could argue there's not much difference between the two bursts:
