I like the Riviera, it appeals to the blues guy in me. I can't really knock Epiphone quality as you are getting what you pay for. There is a reason my explorer says Gibson on the head and not Epiphone, and that was because I wanted a guitar where more attention was paid to detail. The offshore factories are there to turn out cheap playable guitars at a fast pace, Gibson in Nashville is there to turn out expensive playable guitars that look 100% identical to there cheaper counterpart; however with A LOT more attention paid to the details. To say that the Chinese make an inferior product is true and false at the same time, the companies that make stuff to sell within the chinese market are definitely an inferior product (biggest reason why Chinese manufactured vehicles cant leave China) and then you have the Chinese factories that produce products for the international market, and usually to be successful at that you need to have an ISO 9001 certification which is not only hard to obtain but hard to keep as if you don't meet there standards. I would imagine Epiphone's are made in an ISO 9001 certified factory, but ISO 9001 doesn't mean tuners have to be lined up properly or other minor detail things like that.

I've been involved in TQM, ISO 9000, ISO 9001 and Six Sigma.

It's utter carp and a waste of resources. It allows someone check a box off on their performance review sheet. That's all.

There's a whole lot of hooplah and high fiving at the kick-off of the certification process. Then, >fill in the latest 'quality cert program logo here< polo shirts issued to team members. Then months of meetings and documentation and binders for every one. Finally, there may be a certification party, or not. Then 8 months after the helium balloons finally hit the floor, the binders remain on the shelves where they were stowed... .untouched since the cert. "Update?" someone asks? "Don't bother," is the reply, there is this NEW certification procedure that just got released.

Bottom line, if your customer's ain't happy, you have a problem. If you don't fix the problem, you are out of business.

One side benefit, unless it is the real goal, When the business gets down sized, there is some documentation of how "Poor Old Bread Line Charlie" used to do it.
