limber
Can anyone help. Just bought a Gibson Les Paul R9 (Without knowing anything about them), privately, as a present for my Marine son returning from Afghanistan and cant find the serial number information on the Guitar Dater Project site. Says 'Not recognized'. Number is 961043. Could this mean it's a fake?
ChanMan
Call 1 800 4 gibson, or email Service@gibson.com and they can help you. Guitar Dater Project is not all encompassing when it comes to serial numbers... or accuracy for that matter :). Good luck and I'm sure your returning Marine will love it! Tim Plains
That guitar dater project sucks and you should use this instead. Scroll down to Gibson Custom. http://www.gibson.com/en-us/Support/SerialNumberSearch/ And a word to the wise, you should probably do your research on an item before spending thousands of dollars. BigKahune
. BTW, even if you find your serial number is valid, that doesn't mean the guitar is genuine Gibson. Fakers use real serial numbers all the time. It's better to get the guitar identified with pictures and a valid serial. As ChanMan wrote - you can email Gibson - service@gibson.com - with the serial and pics (I think it's a 2mb limit) and they'll help you out. You could also post pics here and the members will tell you what they think. Pics - headstock front and back, overhead complete guitar shot, overhead body shot - keep camera angles to a minimum. Here's picture posting help - http://forum.gibson.com/index.php?/topic/11005-sticky-how-to-post-photos/ - The Photobucket account is free, follow the directions. Thanks for the advice. You are of course right about the research bit. I did in fact research the guitar, in terms of whether it was good, or bad, but not on the authenticity, or serial numbers etc. Hopefully its ok. Whats your opinion on the R9

BigKahune
. Gibson's reissues are very well thought of here. The R9 is one of the favorites. It's a fantastic gift, and I'm glad your son is returning home safely. B)
Tim Plains
Whats your opinion on the R9 Well, my name here is R9 so what does that tell you? LOL Historic reissues - whether it's R6, R8, R9, etc - are the best guitars Gibson makes. They're all the same guitar except for finishes, tops, neck shapes and pickups (P-90s or humbuckers). R9/R0s can sometimes be lighter but not always. They cost more than the other R9s because they have flame tops but are otherwise the same. Google "Gibson Les Paul 101" if you want to learn a little more.
