plagueskill
I've been eyeing a Casino for awhile, waiting for the right deal on a Korean made one, someone has a Qingdao manufactured Casino with Vintage Vibe P-90's and a hardshell case, for $475 on Craigslist, good deal or not? Haggling's not my strong suit, how much would be a good estimate to offer the guy? Are those Vintage Vibe's any good? Thanks in advance!
Versatile
Hi and welcome.... The Vintage Vibes have a good write-up So it comes down to condition in the end.... Is it an auction or a one-off trade offer?... V
clarkuss
I have one of the early chinese Casinos and it's the worst one I've ever owned but all the stuff I've tried in the shops in the last couple of years have been excellent. If you get a chance to play it then that will obviously help you make up your mind.
tweed2
I have an '01 Casino with Vintage Vibes and I love it, it's second only to my Ric and gets played more. The VV pickups are great, I like the fact that you can change the magnet values out, to change the tone. And, they sren't cheap, $180 a pair. I've had Lollar pickups on other guitars and I'd put the VVs at that level. Ask the CL guy if it comes with the extra magnets (if not, Pete sells them directly), it's fun to play with different combinations. You might also ask if he changed out the electrics when he did the PUs, the VVs demand it. I'd say that if it's in good shape, $475 with case, is a good deal. You could probably get a nice used Korean with HSC for the same price, but the PUs are a bonus. If you get it, post pictures.
plagueskill
Heres the ad if anyone wants to see http://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/msg/2645868311.html Serial # checks out to be made in 2008. I couldn't really tell the feel unless I played it, really the only way to tell if its a good buy or not, the finish looks a lot better than most i've seen. I doubt he upgraded the electronics. If its well made and plays well does it really matter where it was manufactured?
bonzoboy
I have a Qingdao Casino and it rings like a bell.I'm not sure if the pups are the V.V.s as there was nothing on the guitar to denote this.Anyway it is my second easiest guitar to play-next to my John Lennon 1965 Casino. It doesn't sound quite as good as the 1965 but the Qingdao is still one great guitar-I paid $550 + Taxes Cdn. for mine in 2009. tweed2
Almost all VV P-90 dog ears are plastic covered. Very few people pay the extra cost to have their chrome ones rebuilt, over having new ones built (I've never understood why new is less). Pete uses epoxy to attach the body of the pickup to the cover. So you can usually tell by removing the mounting screws and lifting up on the cover. If the body goes with it, it's probably a VV. plagueskill
I doubt he'd lie about the pickups, then again he replied to me and said he bought it used so he wasn't sure if the electronics were upgraded so unless the previous owner told him, I doubt he'd know if they were VV's.
