The Lefsetz Letter

The Lefsetz Letter is a blog by Bob Lefsetz. I think he got his start as an attorney in the music bizz, but now writes a column about the music industry. Everything from how to succeed in the music business to how Madonna bombed at the Super Bowl. From how the music business should have embraced Napster to behind the scenes moments during the recording of Rumours. Interesting...

I have read Lefsetz blogs and archives. He gives good common sense advice for the most part. He is articulate and well spoken, not to mention experienced. But he loses me when he brings spirtualism and religion into the equation. Communicating with an outside spiritual force is one of his four points in becoming an accomplished musician. His main point which i agree with, is to play what you like, but make sure your audience likes it too. Kind of simplified it.

Yeah! My Greek brother George Strombolopolous. Great interviewer.

I think Lefsetz speaks a lot of truth, but he has a warped view of bands. Dissing on the White Stripes while putting Zeppelin's first album on an alter is ridiculous. Zeppelin I is full of blues rip offs and is clearly a band still finding its way. They did have the greatest rock drummer of all time, but he didn't mention that.

Great link, I will have to check out more on this guy. I can't base an opinion on just one video but I do agree and disagree with some things said in this particular interview. I don't agree with the comment that the White Stripes as being a gimmick band because of how Jack White dresses and the limited members of the group. I'm not saying that because I like the White Stripes but I am saying that because the clothing worn has no reflection on the sounds being produced. And whether the group has two members or twenty, good music is good music and bad music is bad music. I could be taking his words out of context so I will watch that part again.

But it is hard to define what is good and what is bad when it comes to something that's so subjective as art.

I do agree that there is so much choice in music today with subscription radio and web sites like Pandora. And yes it does get difficult to sift through the tons of artists to find what you like. I usually find out about bands through word of mouth and then I will check them out.

I just wish that a lot of the great unknown bands today would get more recognition on the airwaves rather than what the industry wants me to think is great. How many groups are playing originals in local pubs/clubs that perform excellent and have awesome originality that will never "make it" and never be heard.

Just some opinions and thoughts. But like I said I am definitely interested with hearing more of what this guy has to say and thank you for posting this link.
