Looks like EPI and Gibson changed their site

I have as some know an EPI AJ100 sunburst . It is about three years old or close to it. Mine has the black body binding so you can't really see it and the cheap tuners with covers on them. Tuners work ok if you back them off then tune up. Now they say premium tuners on the AJ100 and AJ 220 or AJ200 yet before they had photo's you could see and the AJ200 had cast tuners like grovers. Now they show white binding on all but the black models which I suppose is fine yet white would show better on a black body.

My question is does anyone here have the AJ 200 or AJ220 and what tuners do they have? I have a set of chrome grovers sitting here I thought I would put on my AJ100 once I get the buzz out of the 18th fret yet I don't know if it's worth doing or not.

They do specify grovers on the more expensive models and the EL-00. I don't mind the so called select spruce top which is laminated yet it does sound good to me. I do have a tusq saddle that will fit that I took off my seagull grand because I wanted a bit higher action and a set of turq pins that I got by mistake for the seagull grand since they need presentation pins so i got those and installed them in the grand . Then turq I got fit EPI's and many others.

I do feel these changes may help some and are not that difficult.

I just wish the Gibson/Epi site was more specific , seems I have to call Gibson to get the answers since no store anywhere near me carries these guitars so I can actually play and compare them. Not that I can afford another guitar even in the distant future. There is a guitar center right near me but they have none and a sam Ash and they just had the AJ100 so I got mine there.

I did have a new John Lennon model new in 1967 , wish I never sold that.

I'm not sure exactly what the concern is if the tuners you have work fine when you back up, then tune "up" to tone. Is that perceived to be a problem?

I've been doing that on all my guitars for close to 50 years 'cuz it's more likely to get kinks out at bridge and/or nut, regardless of quality of strings, bridge, nut and tuners. Ditto even on a fiddle or old style flamenco guitar with wooden friction pegs.

If it ain't slippin', I'd say it ain't all that bad a tuner. Nothing against Grovers and Schallers and such at all, although I have an old 1950s single pickup jazz guitar that had Grovers cludged onto it that looks horrid from the back. It's the "kludge" sorta thing I dislike.

Maybe I'm too old and too old fashioned, but personally I've figured if it ain't broke, I ain't gonna try to fix it. New bridge saddle and nut, well, maybe. Electronics on an AE or electric that sound horrid but plays marvelously, mebbee.

I have a new Epiphone AJ-220SCE which I bought about 6 months ago. The closed steel tuners on the back of my 220 do not state any particular brand name, but they DO work very well, they look very good, and they DO hold the tuning extremely well on mine. In fact my 220 stays in tune a bit better than some of my other much more expensive guitars, so you need not worry about them, nor replace them. Use the extra tuners you have for any guitar you wish, but the 220 will likely not need its tuners replaced any time soon. Good luck

The tuners on the AJ100 hold it in tune fine. Even the tuners on my 1967 Lennon model were not like the grovers and the same on the 1967 casino they were plastic knobs in the traditional Gibson shape and had a fitted cover that was stamped metal and crimped on , they were vintage tuners like I used of the three strats I built and they work just fine, they all had the pressed in ferrel. None of the vintage tuners had adjustments or sealed gears. They still sell the vintage tuners on Stu Mac's site most are made by Gotho.
