My guess, FWIW, is that he simply kept it in a different case for a period of time - perhaps to keep the original case in pristine condition?

 

Whenever I put my guits in cases - and whenever I take them to play 'out' - I don't often put them in the cases they came with.

In fact my R0 always goes into an older, knackered, non-Gibson-branded, case so as not to attract attention from the 'Great Unwashed of Croydon' of an evening...

The case thing is not uncommon Dave, there was an R9 for sale at MLP showing the same, except the guy said which case he was selling. Heck it may be the same guitar but then again maybe not.

 

Those Lifton cases go for a lot of money nowadays, Gibson Historics enthusisasts pay like $300, so even if they sell one of their guitars they will keep that Lifton case for their next historic.
