Andre S
How do you determine whether you LP's neck joint tenon is long or short? a long tennon would be seen in the neck pickup cavity' date=' like so: http://www.abalonevintage.com/guitar_gibson_1959_les_paul_standard_9_0821_dust_2.jpg You can see where it ends, that space there. A short neck tennon would not be seen in the neck pickup cavity, so the cavity would have no space and the wood should be uniform. Failing that....a band saw could help like: [img']http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg225/Gibson_Tim/tenonslpfjpeg.jpg[/img] If you mean in terms of which years have what then...... [biggrin] No idea.
T Bone
Some insight on which guitars have which tenons can be found in this article on another Forum (hope it's okay to link another Forum's thread here, that is how I found this one).
Tim Plains
Obviously, remove your neck pickup and look in the hole.

vincentw
Right. And you'll see what looks like a smile (thin gap) in the front pickup cavity.
