The J-45’s relative scarcity in bluegrass has more to do with the didactic herd mentality of bluegrass musicians than with actual sound. Charlie Monroe was perfectly content to play Gibson slopes, and since he was present at the creation of bluegrass (accompanying brother Bill Monroe) then his choice of instruments can’t be discounted. Even Cleo Davis, who succeeded Charlie on guitar, played Gibson slopes. By the time Lester Flatt joined the band in ‘46, Martins were in vogue. If Lester had played a J-45, people today would consider a D-18 or D-28 too boomy for bluegrass.

Sean Watkins plays bluegrass "style" with a Gibby, but yea, it is weird how that turned out.

I'm sticking with mine, but I'm not hardly strictly bluegrass, either...

I'm a working singer-songwriter and I own and play a 2006 Bozeman Gibson J 45. It is my day to day guitar and it has a classic J45 sound that I love. But when it had to go in the shop, I needed a great back up guitar that could at least compare to it - but didn't cost me quite as much. After much looking and playing, I fell in love with a Breedlove Oregon dreadnought.  Sitka spruce top,  Ebony fretboard, silky maple neck, Myrtlewood back and sides. It's a really special guitar with a big full sound and a wider neck that's great for fingerpicking.  It's a different voice from the Gibson, but it's a great sound.  That's the Breedlove in this video below.

    Mighty fine.

Question, for those that have experience - are the J-15’s known to have a brighter tone than other Gibsons? I’ve never played another one. I always had it in my head that all Gibsons were on the bright side.

I'd call mine "chunky". My J-45 is rosewood/ebony and it's more "woody" to me. But louder than the walnut imo.

Here's mine, no effects just an SM57 through a Bose S1-Pro.

  4. During his physical, the doctor asked the patient about his daily activity level

He described a typical day this way: 'Well, yesterday afternoon, I waded along the edge of a lake, drank eight beers, escaped from wild dogs in the heavy brush, jumped away from an aggressive rattlesnake, marched up and down several rocky hills, stood in a patch of poison ivy, crawled out of quicksand and took four leaks behind big trees.'
Inspired by the story, the doctor said, 'You must be one heck of an outdoors man!

'NAH,' he replied, 'I'm just a crappy golfer.'

  5. A hunter kills and eats a bald eagle, and is arrested for violating the Endangered Species Act. He pleads guilty, and throws himself on the mercy of the court.

"Your Honor," the hunter said, "I had no idea that it was illegal to kill and eat a bald eagle. If you let me go, I'll never do it again."

"You've committed a very serious crime," the judge replies. "But you clearly weren't aware of the law, so I'm willing to overlook it this one time. However, before I let you go, I'm going to ask you to do one thing."

"Anything, Your Honor," the hunter replies. "What is it?"

The judge says, "It's been illegal to kill a protected species for many years, so very few people have ever eaten a bald eagle. For the record, can you please tell everyone what a bald eagle tastes like?"

The hunter thinks for a moment and then replies, "It tastes pretty good. Kind of like a cross between a spotted owl and a condor."

  6. There are a lot of options in acoustic amps. If you are going to sing through it as well, I really like the Bose stuff. I piggy-back (line out) theS1-Pro along with an L1-Compact for live venues all the time. If it's large and/or outdoors, sometimes I'll line that out to a Carvin AG100D. Or a p.a. system. Or a 4:10 cab/xr600.

My daughter has a Fender Rumble bass amp that sounds great with her Epiphone acoustic. However, it won't work for vocals.

Try stuff and be creative. There are no rules.

  7. I got nuthin' on the film. No clue.

As for the rattle, they can be hard to find. I had a Marshall 1/2 stack that we noticed a rattle on in the studio (that was costing us per HOUR) back in the 90's.

I took that amp home and it took two of us all night to figure it out.

Rattles and sympathetic rattles can be hard to find, sometimes.
