As Sal said, they did a good-looking job filling in that pocket for the bone saddle.
I've had two J50's. A 1954 and currently a 1968. I tried the adjustable bridge with tusk and rosewood but preferred solid bone saddle on rosewood bridge sound. To each his own.
Enjoy!

D-28 = 5/16 bracing
D-35 = 1/4 bracing
Both standard models are not scalloped. HD’s may be. I can’t remember.
Their HD 40 series have always been my favorites.
I just got a 0012-28 I’m trying to get used to. -

Hiscox cases are VERY good, would recomend.
I've had a couple and still have one. I don't know if they're still made this way, but I don't care for the metal rim around the edge. Easy to nick the guitar.

I bought one of the new '42 Banner SJ in 2020. It's one of my favorites. I really think the baked top adds to the sound and brings out that rosewood sound. I don't think it sounds like one from the '40's but maybe from the '50's. I like the neck, not too big, not too small.
I've bought my last couple guitars from Music Villa and they've been very easy to work a deal with.

Some friends of mine went the night before in Cincinnati to see them. Pretty much the same response. They were really impressed by Willie and liked the Southern Ave group.

I have a friend that prefers the wider spacing. He gets 12 string guitars and strings them up as a 6 string. I believe the Gibson 12 string nut is 1.88”

I’ve had a few newer Smecks that were 1.81.
I have a new Martin that is 1.81.
I have a Taylor nylon that is 1.875I’ve never had a 1.875 steel guitar except for a 12 string.

I like variety. A few weeks ago a Gibson '06 L4A arrived (think J185CE). This week a new Martin 0012-28 Modern Deluxe. I have most sizes covered from 00 to Super 400.
You have a Martin 16" dread and a Gibson 16" dread. Venture out a little bit. You shouldn't rule out the used market. If you find one you like but want to get a new one, it will be easy to move the used one. I did that with the 000-28EC. Bought it used, liked it, sold it, bought a new 000-28EC SB.
I just bought a L4A off Ebay for $760. Not new but in great shape. There are bargains out there if you're patient.

That was funny. I chose to laugh, rather than get offended.
That was the intent but sometimes I need to curb my humor. When I saw the white mustache, the Hulk was the first thing that popped in my head. I definitely like my Martins. I have a new 0012-28 Modern Deluxe due any day. No graphics. I'm still going to vote.

Great looking guitar. I would repost this in the Acoustic section.

Oh, my. A preference for a fake wrestler over a brilliant musician. I don't care about politics when deciding the artists I embrace. And, well, when I'm considering the merits of artists, I don't include fake wrestlers. Sigh.
In reality, I wouldn't buy either one. I think the only two Martin guitars with graphics that I've ever consider buying was the Louvin Brothers and the Fly Fisherman.

If they took off Crosby and replaced him with Hulk Hogan, I'd get one.

Looks like Gibson used this pickguard on other models

As I mentioned in the other thread about this guitar (in the Vintage forum), I'm not a flat-top expert, but the pickguard on this one struck me as being a bit different in shape from what I would have expected. Do any of you guys with more experience with flat-tops have any thoughts about the pickguard? I tried to enlarge the photo to get a better idea of the material, but found that difficult. Anyway, just curious whether it's original, or maybe custom ordered (?), or perhaps a replacement.
Here' a '41 that sold on reverb and one from True vintage. The OP's looks a little different but the last one from HQ looks the same.

Nice guitar! The site Jim mentioned is a great resource. Per it, the FON is 1940 but the bridge features start in 1941, so this is probably somewhere in between that crossover. You may want to repost this in the Acoustic section.

Maybe you guys could record & upload some different types of playing for us to hear?
My JB is long gone. Traded for a DIF.

Like Dan, I had one in a Jackson Browne and it's the best pickup system I have heard.

Do you need some ferrules for the pegs?

Some of the Banner SJ did have the individual tuners. I think your tuners may be era correct.
Willi has a thread on UMGF about tuners
Here's your 2 picts and one from the thread that shows your tuners on a '43 SJ
If you want a set of vintage 3 on a plate, let me know and I'll fix you up.

Yes, just play the guitar, but when you (I)can’t do that, at least we (I) can talk about them.
I think I’m entering that stage of my life. 😀

Brazilian Rosewood Gibson question ledgers?

Visibly the EIR will be riddled with spores where the BRW will be significantly less. If you can get some shavings, you can do the fluorescent and buoyancy test. You could lightly sand on the inside of the guitar. The BRW has a very distinct aroma. They do have a visible color difference but that can be misleading. I educated myself a few years ago by getting samples of each and a 10x magnifier when I started shopping around for an older Martin BRW.
