Curious, did you create this profile just to make this post? Your history is brand spanking new, are you afraid to come out using your normal profile? What do you have to hide?  What's with all the caps in your other posts? Just CURIOUS.....

I'm not surprised you  have never "found it necessary".  That's why I was questioning your suggestion.  That is an "easier said than done" suggestion that can easily not be a good suggestion.  Without personal experience, how can you consider that a good suggestion?  Especially being sure he will win?  That seems to lack your smattering of common sense.  Sorry, but I disagree that it is anything close to a good suggestion in this case.

It was a suggestion and/or option, be it good or bad, it was up to the OP could consider or not. Pippy suggested I stuff an opinion up my arse once, did I consider it, yes. Did I follow it, no. Was is good or bad advise, I guess you had to be there. The point I'm trying to make, an option was thrown out and its upon the OP to accept it or not. If I was a betting man, Pippy knew he wasn't going to take that advice. I would also bet the OP wouldn't take the advise.

Totally agree. Because I like their guitars I hope they overcome the bad publicity and we go back to talking about guitars instead of of business and legal decisions.

I hope you enjoy yours as much as I'm enjoying mine. I'm always a bit nervous talking about how much I like mine, because, some people might have different tastes or get unlucky in with their orders. Mine is also a heritage cherry sunburst as well. To be honest, I thought the finish on mine was a bit meh. Nothing is actually wrong with it, it's just that I prefer a deeper/darker yellow. However, I bonded with the guitar so much, I traded in a guitar a few days later that I didn't play as much to get it. I honestly wasn't planning on getting mine and was just curious to try one for myself. I made the trip on the third trip to the store 🙂

I have to sell a guitar to finance this purchase so I don't have to live under that bridge.

I think there has been an improvement in their guitars. It's not perfect yet and maybe Gibson guitars will always have some quirks to them, but compared to what I've seen, especially compared to the 2019 models lineup under the previous leadership, there have been huge improvement on the fit and finish of the guitars. Yes, you still see some sloppiness every now and then, but, based on the guitars I've tried so far and what I read regarding people's experience, I'm under the impression those seem to occur far less than before. The trend seems to be heading in the right direction.

One interesting anecdote is that I've read was of people complaining about the fretboards when the first few guitar batches were released. My Standard 50s fretboard, for instance, didn't fall in the bad category, but it did look considerably better after I conditioned its fretboard. However, I've also seen people reporting that the later batches had better conditioned fretboards. In a recent trip to a guitar store, I saw a new Gibson shipment come in. Although I only saw a small sample of about 7 guitars, they corroborated with what I've seen been reported. The fretboards of that shipments look much nicer than the examples I saw when they first came out.

Your post make the most sense to me. Although Gibson shot themselves in the foot with that video, I think the future is looking much brighter than it has looked.

Your story about your Standard 50s pushed me over the edge and I just said f--k it and pulled the trigger on at Wildwood and got myself one. I got the Cherry Burst!

  5. On the world wide web you can own as many guitars as you say you have. 😉

I would have to guess I have owned around 35 in my life mostly Fenders. I currently have 12 guitars to include a mandolin, lap steel guitar, and a Persian sitar

Martin is alright but I dunno about iconic

I should make a T-shirt that says “iconic” in a certain iconic font. For non-profit educational purposes of course

I know you say that in jest, but I think you may have found a way to make some quick cash. Wonderful idea!

Some stickers for our guitar cases....?

EDIT:   Patent that idea real quick!

I'll preface my comments by saying I never watched the video because I wasn't really that interested, now it's been pulled and I can't find it anywhere.

Anyway, I'm not an attorney but I understand that the precedence is that the body shapes can't be trademarked but the headstock can.  In a way this makes sense.  Most headstocks are unique identifiers of a brand or model.  However, I think that the courts may have been wrong about the body shape.  My recollection is that  they said something like these are all shapes that that people would have come up with eventually anyway, therefore they aren't really unique, or something close to that.  I don't think I agree with that.  It would almost be like saying you could make a car that is exactly like a corvette but just put a different logo on it and your good.

Just because the court(s) made a decision doesn't make it correct, it's just the current precedent.  If you can come in and make a better argument then precedent doesn't matter.  I think the body shapes are complex and unique and I think these should be protected.  I do see the problem as it relates to acoustics.  For them the shape is really part of the function of the instrument, and they've been around so long who knows who came up with them first.  Also, I don't know that it's ever been specifically challenged, maybe it has.  But, for electrics, the body shape doesn't really have much to do with function, it's all pretty much aesthetic.  As such it should be protected.

Personally, I don't really care very much one way or the other.   I was never going to buy a Dean guitar before and I'm still not gonna buy one now.

If I want a guitar shaped like a Les Paul, I will buy a Les Paul. If I want a guitar shaped like a Stratocaster, I will buy a Stratocaster. Both Fender and Gibson have cheap versions of their "iconic" brands. Epipihone, Squire, yada, yada, yada. I never been drawn to Dean, their guitars are made to appeal to the  Metal Heads.  I'm in your camp, I don't give two shitz about the law suit, but I do find the approach stupid.

At first I thought nothing about the video that was released, but then watching the events unfold, this was a misstep here on Gibson’s part. They shouldn’t have announced in the disgruntled video they are protecting their stuff, then turn around and get a lawsuit going. They attacked the consumer for not being authentic which is just wrong. There’s a reason why the video isn’t there anymore... To add, people today don’t care what other stuff is out there, they will buy a LP for north of 2 G’s because they like the guitar. But now that you will buy a 10lb hunk of wood that breaks your back every band practice for this kind of money only to promote the avid disrespect for the customer letting you know YOU need to play authentic and we are going to make sure only authentic stuff comes out because we are taking legal action to stomp out the competition this way is just bad. Every dollar you put toward this company promotes this “we are going to sue you because you are our perceived competition” strategy so they think they can get a grip in the market.

People just want an “iconic” guitar that plays well and inspires them to continue making music. Shame on Gibson for shaming us for not being “authentic”. Just another greedy company trying to make a power play and look how much backfire has come their way. I post this here on their forum because they are going on the wrong direction and basically blew anything good they had going for them with new leadership because I wanted this company to succeed. And for what... To see this crap happen? Get real Gibson. You’ve done more damage to yourself then help - a lot of damage. People were ready to buy your $2.5k LPs and we were digging them, but now your 10lb hunks of wood will collect dust because you shamed us for not being authentic - which no one really gave a F about in the first place... have fun suing smaller guitar companies and trying to do a power play in the market after a bankruptcy. You’ll sell more guitars next year for more money this way... Sorry but I can’t stand by this company after all the sticking up for you during the tougher recent times. Not going to sell my Gibsons but I’m not going to give my patronage anymore. Don’t care what happens in the lawsuit, the damage is done. Shouldn’t have gone after the consumer in that insulting video you removed. Who flipping does that? I mean wow!

Wow Chris, I didn't see it as a slam on the consumer but I can see where someone can take it and such. I perceive this whole lawsuit stuff as a way for Gibson to get themselves out of the red. It's a bit desperate move IMHO.

I just checked my reverb payouts.  Since October 2016, I've taken in a bit over $6,700!  Unfortunately, the amount of my reverb purchases exceeds that amount.  :^/   But I do have 8 very nice guitars!

That's the problem with guitar players, we always end up in the red!!! ("Well, I'll sell this amp, a few pedals, and this old guitar I have under the bed. That should cover the new Les Paul.") Never quite works out like its planned.

"I met her in a bar down in North Soho where you drink Champagne and it tastes just like Coca-Cola. C-O-L-A Cola..."

    As this, obviously, contains a brand name of a well-known soft drink the BBC's rules forbade the song from being aired and so another version was released with altered lyrics;

"I met her in a bar down in North Soho where you drink Champagne and it tastes just like cherry-cola. C-O-L-A Cola..."

    Pip.

Wow, never knew that one. I always heard the Coca-Cola version. Just listened to the cherry cola version, Dave sounds a bit snarky...
