SG Standard Pickguard Conversion

Hi folks,

I have an SG Standard (2004) and I've been thinking of late about modding it with the smaller '61 pickguard.

Has anyone done this? I have a couple of questions:

- Will the pickup routing show at all?

- Will any after market parts fit? ie from WD Music or All Parts?

I know the screw holes will be left over but I don't mind that, the guitar has seen a lot of action at gigs.

Further mods would be to add an ABR-1 bridge and Maestro Vibrola!

I don't plan to sell the guitar.

In all honesty, no more than Epi's cost, I'd leave your current guitar alone,

save some money, and get the G-400 Faded, G-400 Pro, or Custom w/Maestro, or

G-400 TV Pelham blue w/maestro. IF you "mod" your other one, you will, as you

stated, have leftover visible screw holes, etc.

But, if determined to do your "mods," there are a LOT of aftermarket places that

have parts, to fit Epi's, including WD Music, All Parts, and even StewMac!

Just be sure they are "metric" as opposed to imperial (USA) spec's.

Good Luck!

+1. There's plenty of good deals on used Epi SG's, get one of those. The routes for the PU's in a batwing (large) pickguard may be too big to be totally covered up by the PU rings if you convert to the angel wing (small) pickguard.

Adding an aftermarket Maestro means you'd have two big holes showing where the stop bar was. Doing all those mods would give you a guitar that looks like Swiss cheese with all the holes. It's a lot of money in mods and the results would be crappy. Just not a good idea.

Thanks for the responses.

I shoulda mentioned that this infact a Gibson SG Standard and not Epiphone :)

Posted in here cos the Gibson SG thread above is deserted :P

Well, IMHO...even more reason NOT to "Mod" it, as indicated. Just save

and get a new SG "Original," or..wait until they've been out awhile,

and some "used" ones turn up on E-bay, or some such?! [biggrin]
