Neck Worn To Wood

Hey all, I'm new to the forum, looks like a great corner of the web. I have an '83 explorer-my favorite (and right now only)guitar. The neck was a little worn when I got it, but over the last 12 years I've put some mileage on it. The back of the neck is worn down to the wood. Through the finish, even through the red stain. I love the character, but the playability has gotten noticibly different. My hand kinda sticks to the neck if I'm not careful. Can I do anything to help this? Is there an oil I can just rub into the neck to help make things smooth again? Can I/should I get it refinished? I'd like to retain the worn look if possible. I tried uploading a picture, but it was too big and I'm not savvy enough to make it smaller. Thanks!

Are you saying that you are sticking to the bare wood? If not, and it is just the old laquer that is getting sticky, some guys used to use steel wool to take the rest of the finish off and that seemed to make the neck feel smoother and less sticky.

0000 grade Ultra Fine Stainless wool to the rescue !! (stainless won't get stuck to your p'ups, but cover them anyhow)

10 minute rubdown in the sticky area will have it feeling(but not looking) better than new !

or

a dishwashing "scruffy pad" mounted in a palm sander......takes a bit longer, but no chance of overbuffing.

neither of these will make it LOOK any better, but the feel will be unbeatable.

as we say in the South, "slicker n owl shiznit" !!
