Jimi Mac
The 490r 498t are the best pickups gibson makes in my book. Oh and FYI the only difference in a 57 Classic and a 490r is the Gibson stamp on the base plate versus the PAF sticker. Same wire magnet and maple spacer. I 2nd this! I love the 490R/498T combination! I'm heavy on the rhythm position in my playing. I spend over 80% of my playing time on the neck pickup, for rhythm, fills, and solos, and I love a 490R best! When you want to wail like a vintage/classic Les Paul on a bridge pickup, the 498T is simply the best for this to my ear... My next Les Paul will have that combination as a must-have configuration. I'm leaning toward a Custom or possibly a GT right now... Maybe even a Custom-Lite!
BlackGLP
I'd try a DiMarzio D Activator if for high output or a D Sonic for a medium output.
Karloff
The only pickup swaps I've done, was going from the (stock) Hot Ceramic's, in my LP Classic, to '57's! I've Never regretted it! And, all of my SG's have '57's, as well. But, that's just Me! Your prefecences may be different? CB I did a similar thing with my 07 Classic. Put Pearly gates in it. Great...
