I actually chortled out loud at this one - not because of your question itself, but because there have been ongoing discussions in various sections of the Gibson/Epi guitar forums where this has been argued almost endlessly. Some of the folks, especially flattop folks, wanna go back to the open back tuners that in the '60s and '70s everybody was replacing with Grovers. I have no idea what Lennon may have used. I have natural finish Casino Grovers (rather than grocers - did make me laugh!) are excellent machine heads and I experience no problems with them at all.
