What's is the difference between dot figured gloss and dot gloss

There's graining (from the growth rings of the tree the wood was cut from), and there's figuring (other visually noticeable elements that can come from the grain, the cut, or the specific properties of the wood type).


In the pic just below, you can see a plain top with no figuring, just some faint grain lines running more or less parallel to the strings.


In the second pic below, you can see the figuring in the maple top running perpendicular to the strings. . B)

For an LP - plain top - all you can see is the grain lines running more or less parallel to the strings -
