zombywoof Posted September 9, 2014 Share Posted September 9, 2014 I started off with a harp player doing folk and blues. We actually had one gig at a local Folk Music Society. Sometime in late 1964 we added a bass and drummer but all we knew how to do was the same stuff we had been doing. We were now just plugging in to play it. I heard it first by Doc Watson and play it sort of like he did, not the Paxton version I finally heard later. My favorite version of Last Thing On My Mind is on an album called "Earl Scruggs - His Family & Friends," recorded live & literally in the field. Doc Watson plays (with Merle) & sings an up-tempo version of his familiar take on the song, with Earl providing some harmony vocals. Also a killer version of Salty Dog Blues with the Morris Brothers, Love Is Just A Four Letter Word with Joan Baez, and more. The album was released in 1971 - loved it then & now.
