Cheesecake666
Hello good people. I`ve decided to buy new tuning pegs for my 2013 Firebird. I don't like the Steinberger tuners (I just can't stand them, case closed). Because of the impossibility of getting the old firebird banjo tuners at a fair price, I wonder if these will be any good: http://www.stewmac.com/Hardware_and_Parts/Tuning_Machines/Banjo/Waverly_Banjo_Tuning_Pegs.html A guitar tech told me that the diameter on the new tuners should be bigger than the old, because then he would be able to make them fit. As my spec sheet reading skills are somewhat bad, I wondered if any of you guys could help me out here. Will they fit? Here is the spec sheet for the steinberger`s, for comparison: http://www.stewmac.com/product/images/5257/Steinberger_Gearless_Tuners.jpg I know that Stephen Stills used banjo tuners just like the waverly`s in his firebird-years, a good sign there. If anyone have tried it, please let me know (especially about how that 4:1 ratio will work on an electric guitar. I am a banjo player, so maybe it won't be so unfamiliar?). To be sure, they look beautiful compared to the steinberger`s. If they fit/work just as beautifully as they look, I will buy them at once. Thanks. SteveFord
Sometime back Mr. Natural was asking the same question. Perhaps he found the answer?
Jim Zeppelin
Hey Cheesecake666, What don't you like about them? Just curious. I just picked up a '13 bird myself. I actually like them. As long as you cut your string to the proper length and tighten the lock screw down enough they seem to be fine. Pretty smooth. I am a little paranoid about a string coming loose during an ultr-bend but it hasn't happened to me yet. Jim
ZuWa
Also be prepared for the banjo tuners to make the guitar neck heavy - a commn complaint.
Paul G.
Banjo tuners are also very touchy. Ratio is very low, 4:1 or so, so they're closer to friction pegs than anything you're used to. So, heavy, touchy and hard to use. OK. Still, they are awfully pretty.
