A similar question was recently posted over at UMGF in the Vintage Corner, right here.

 

It generated quite a bit of interesting discussion. You might glean some insight there.

 

Myself, I would only think of it as somebody's "personal ID" system.

 

I have a '53 SJ from Alberta that someone scratched an id # onto, probably his license or something. The one you show is nice and neatly done with a tool die, so suggests a store's stock number. Not too many J-200s would have been teaching instruments...!
