Howlin4Hubert Posted March 6, 2009 Posted March 6, 2009 Just curious about posting guitar serial numbers? Sorry of this is in the wrong forum or dumb question. I notice that some post their serial number or pictures of it without hesitation while others obfuscate it so no one can see what it is. My question is: What is the danger in posting your serial number? Is there a time it is OK to do so, say a newer guitar, and a time that you wouldn't want to, say with a vintage model, or does it really matter? Thanks for any thoughts!
rocketman Posted March 6, 2009 Posted March 6, 2009 The thinking is that someone can take your serial number and make a copy of your guitar. Don't know how much it really happens, but probably enough times that we should be careful and not post numbers whenever possible.
Tim Plains Posted March 6, 2009 Posted March 6, 2009 I wonder if it would actually affect the value of the original Les Paul with that serial number? I don't see what the harm is anymore. Anybody can go to gibson.com and learn the serial number format.
NeoConMan Posted March 6, 2009 Posted March 6, 2009 Yeah, it's a counterfeit defense and a theft/fraud thing. I personally don't post entire serial numbers unless I'm selling a guitar on Ebay. I won't buy one online unless I get a confirmation from Gibson that it's what the serial says it should be. Easy, they're open 24/7.
