darling67
I've been away from these forums for a while... been busy with life stuff, etc. But I am making a triumphant return this morning with a little Pre-NGD news.... This baby will be arriving later this week. I'd been eyeing the 2019 Gibson version of this guitar, but when Epiphone announced the release of these—and for a grand less(!)—I knew I'd found my next guitar. Here are some Sweetwater images of my new SG Special in Faded Pelham Blue. Will post my own pics soon.
mihcmac
Epiphone introduced a very similar model in 2011 the Limited Edition 50th Anniversary 1961 SG Special, they were only built during 2011. Interesting that the price of these was almost double of the 2020 model, in 2011 being a Custom Shop SG. There are a few minor differences like some of the hardware and this one having the clipped headstock. These are wonderful playing and sounding guitars. They came in Black, Arctic White, TV Yellow and Cherry. Sometimes these are called 61 Re-issues because Epiphone built them as close to the 61 spec as possible, including the 61 neck profile, electronics, Epiphone Classic P90's, Wilkinson 3 in a row rack tuners, Lightening Bar Bridge and even an antiqued selector switch knob. My 61 Epi SG Specials showing the old style 3 in a row rack tuners With a set neck the Beautiful SG Special with the new original Epi headstock its a whole lot of guitar at the 2020 price.. I recall seeing those, but the longer Epiphone headstock was a deal-breaker for me. That headstock is good for Casinos, Rivieras, etc., etc. But it looks awful on SG's and Les Pauls. So, I was ecstatic when I saw these "Inspired By Gibson" Kalamazoo headstock models at NAMM. Edited March 7, 2020 by darling67 Wanted to get rid of all the images that make the response too long. No, the headstock is much smaller than the Casino's but the same size as my LP's. I am excited about the return of the new headstock from earlier Epiphones like the 62 Wilshire reissue below. or the first headstock used on the Coronet that was introduced in 57.. It's that more"fluted" headstock that I don't like on the SGs and LPs. These Kalamazoo headstocks are on-point! 😍👍 I love that Wilshire. Epiphone is killing me this year! I'd wanted to get a Les Paul Standard '60s, but it's going to have to wait to later this year...😕

Enjoy.... my modded 61 below.. Edited March 8, 2020 by mihcmac

gearhead
I really like the new Inspired by Gibson line. Been looking hard at them! LOL. Yea, like I NEED another guitar! Have 9 gits and a bass now! But NEED has nothing to do with it. GAS!

I "promised" my wife I had "no need" for another guitar this year.... that I had enough and what I needed.... But, as you pointed out... this is not about "need". "Need" has no place in the world of guitar acquisition. Unfortunately, my new Epi SG Special has some relatively minor issues—but enough so that I need to have it "fixed". As such, I've not been in the right frame of mind to post my own pics yet. I feel like it should be in tip-top playability at the time of the official "NGD" announcement!
