Recent Chinese Casino Electronics

Does anyone have any solid information on the electronics of recent Chinese Casinos?  Specifically the pots, switch, wiring ,and pickups.  I've got a Casino coming that might be 1 or 2 years old.  I am thinking of getting a set of Lollar p-90s to put in, if needed.  I see he has 3 models of the Dog-Ear style available.  Which one is the most popular and useful?

Is everybody also replacing pots?  What is the current value(500 or 250) used in the recent Chinese Casinos?

How about thoughts on replacing the wiring harness and switch?

Ideas on the best sources on any of these parts?

Thanks for any suggestions.

So currently in 2020 you have the Asian Casino's with the original Headstock;

The Casino Coupe for $499         P-90T Classic Dogear and pots unspecified

The Casino Worn for $449           P90 Pros with CTS pots

The Casino for $649.                        P-90T Classic Dogear and pots unspecified

They all list the same Epiphone Toggle Switch

In my opinion, any guitar whose pots are open to the environment should have sealed pots, for example, Bourns type 82 or 95.  Otherwise you will be cleaning them regularly.

The new worn Casinos have the “P-90 Pro” pickups, which are an improvement over the ones in the standard Casino, which are overwound and muddy.

I also think the thin finish is another big improvement. I thinned down the poly clear coat on my 2017 Casino, and it made a big difference. The guitar was livelier and more resonant without that thick blanket.

I called Epiphone, according to them all electronics are the same between the standard Casino and the new Worn, CTS pots, P90 Pro pick ups... I bought a new standard from Sweetwater, nice dark fretboard, f holes could be finished nicer, action very high, pickups sound good. I took it in to local luthier for set up, he said frets were good, only work was to set action lower and installDR Pure Blues strings, night and day difference after being set up, so easy and fun to play now.0.thumb.jpg.e9c0597fc949528f4615b5afaeabb308.jpg

Like Alpine11, I took my new Casino to my local luthier for a complete check and set-up.  He was impressed with the build quality and could find no real issues.  Some intonation adjustments at the bridge and slight string height adjustment was all that it needed.  Remember that Epiphone has its own factory in China that is supervised by Epiphone ( the Casinos are not made by Cort or another subcontractor).  Knowing this, I would not expect that Epiphone would allow the China Casinos to be of lesser quality.

hey stevo58 can you describe how you 'thinned down' the finish? I'm thinking to remove the poly coat from my 2020(?) Natural Casino (a la John  & George) but haven't figured out the best way to remove it - sanding vs stripping vs heat gun. But 'thinning it'--I don't have any idea how one would do that. Can you explain?

600 grit wet sand and patience. Know when to stop.

To be more complete, when you wet sand, you will produce a milky white sludge. As long as it is milky white, you are removing the thick poly clear coat. As soon as it starts to take on color, you are through the clear coat and are now removing colored lacquer (or poly, whatever). So I worked slowly and patiently, drying the wood often and checking what it looked like.

I completely removed the finish on the back of the neck, down to the rock-hard filler. The black on the back of the neck was also very thick. I had intended to oil the neck, but that filler wasn’t going to go anywhere and it felt fine, so I left it.

When I was finished I used micro mesh up to 8000 to give it a semi-gloss.

I removed everything - including the bridge bushings - before doing any of this.  I was going to replace the 8mm pot metal bushings with 12mm hardened steel Faber bushings anyway.

Lately I’ve been considering going back and doing a full Lennon on it. Not because I worship John; I just never really liked the sunburst on the Casinos with the hard black outline. I only bought this color because it had the stiffest neck in the store.

According to the Epi site, the standard has “P90 Classic” and the worn “P90 Pro” pickups. The ones that came on mine were far too hot and muddy for my taste.
