L48 - Machine Heads/Tuning Knobs Inquiry

Recommended Posts

Hey guys.  I am wanting to replace the tuning knobs on a L48 and am seeking some advice.  The knobs that were on it crumbled when I had the guitar set-up a few years ago; the technician replaced the originals with a new set of machine heads that have black knobs.  They work fine but do not really fit the aesthetic of the guitar.  Does anyone have recommendations of where I can find a new set that is more in line with this guitar?   I've included a link below from the Gibson website; the machines/knobs on the L48 were on 2 brackets; not 6 individual heads.  I had a friend tell me that they make vintage keys that don't look so new/shiny; figured the forums was a good place to start the conversation!   Thanks!

If you still have the original tuners, it is easy to replace the crumbled original buttons with near-perfect replicas.  No reason to throw the original tuners away.

I agree with Nick. If you do need replacements StewMac is a good resource. Be sure to check your hole size and the replacement pegs and bushings.

I have the golden age ones on mine- they look the part and are honestly the best tuners on any of my guitars. definitely recommend them over Gibson's offerings.  the white is a little WHITE but nothing a little kiwi couldn't tone down.
