W. Bledsoe
Hey guys. I am wanting to replace the tuning knobs on a L48 and am seeking some advice. The knobs that were on it crumbled when I had the guitar set-up a few years ago; the technician replaced the originals with a new set of machine heads that have black knobs. They work fine but do not really fit the aesthetic of the guitar. Does anyone have recommendations of where I can find a new set that is more in line with this guitar? I've included a link below from the Gibson website; the machines/knobs on the L48 were on 2 brackets; not 6 individual heads. I had a friend tell me that they make vintage keys that don't look so new/shiny; figured the forums was a good place to start the conversation! Thanks! https://www.gibson.com/Gear/Tuning/PMMH-060 Pictures of guitar:
j45nick
If you still have the original tuners, it is easy to replace the crumbled original buttons with near-perfect replicas. No reason to throw the original tuners away.

Be sure to check your hole size and the replacement pegs and bushings. https://www.stewmac.com/parts-and-hardware/tuning-machines/solid-peghead-guitar-tuning-machines/golden-age-vintage-style-3onplate-tuners.html https://www.stewmac.com/parts-and-hardware/tuning-machines/solid-peghead-guitar-tuning-machines/golden-age-restoration-tuners-for-solid-peghead-guitar-with-scallop-end.html https://www.stewmac.com/parts-and-hardware/tuning-machines/solid-peghead-guitar-tuning-machines/kluson-3-on-a-plate-deluxe-series-tuning-machines.html Edited February 1, 2021 by Dave F
cunningham26
I have the golden age ones on mine- they look the part and are honestly the best tuners on any of my guitars. definitely recommend them over Gibson's offerings. the white is a little WHITE but nothing a little kiwi couldn't tone down.
