Slopeshoulder
Hi guys, Im new to the group and just purchased a j-45 studio rosewood. I love the guitar but i just noticed the guitar was built without verticle sidewall bracing. I was alittle taken back by this. Are all current versions of the j-45 made this way? If so, i never noticed.
zombywoof
First welcome and congrats on the Gibson. Gibson stopped using wood or stiffened fabric side supports in the early-1950s. The only exceptions I can think of were the J200 and CF-100 which continued to have that feature through the decade and in the case of the J200 into the 1960s if not longer. Slopeshoulder
Thanks so much for the info. Im really glad to hear that. Happy to know its not amatter of corners being cut🙂!! I have to say the quality of woods and construction are a beauty. Anyone own a j45 50's original series? Got my eye on those too
zombywoof
I believe the purpose of the fabric or wood side supports was to prevent cracking to the sides caused by the pressure of clamping down the top or the back during construction. Dave F
They still use fabric sides on some reissues and legend series
TomPhx
The 2017 J200 Western Classic has side braces. Don't know if the Standard 200s still do or not.
zombywoof
My 1920 L3 and my wife's 1960 J200 have wood supports. My 1932 L1 and 1942 J50 have fabric side supports which I assume is linen. The 1946 LG2 I used to own also had fabric supports although unlike the others it was a blue color.
