heymisterk
My guitar teacher told me to play with them straight, hanging down; told me it allowed better precision and speed. That said, I see plenty of great player using the "fist" position...
vagabond
1) makes alt picking easier 2) just more comfortable good poll though, I always wondered why people use the fist thing. Just seems like they're strangling the pick and it can't be good for control.
FirstMeasure
I leave my fingers dangle, it is best for Alt/Hybrid/Travis picking. When I was starting out everyone who took formal Guitar Lessons told Me I did it wrong, but I'm still at it and most of them are playing the radio. TinFish
I am somewhere in between, my fingers don't hang out they curl up. They are not in a tight fist or anything though they stay relaxed. I voted curled up...
heymisterk
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RheBZB9ojd0 Good clip. EVH and Page play that way as well, but I am neither, so I do what I'm taught: Hang, man. I used to play bunched up; took me months to break the habit. I'm somewhat faster and more precise having done so.
