ledzep59
I don't think being a guitarist requires ego, but showmanship. Instead of ego, one could substitute swagger (Brian May), flamboyance (pick one), hyperactivity (Randy Rhoads), or a huge smile (EVH). Thinking of music as entertainment makes us realize that there are many ways to keep the mind of an audience occupied, like explosions, fire, and costumes (Kiss). When we look at music as expression, we realize that there are amazing guitarists who can sit down and look at the floor and still blow you away (BB King). Dinosaur Jr's guitarist (J Mascis) puts on an excellent show and is very talented but on stage seems very reserved and seems to lack an ego if anything. There are many ways of being looked at as a successful guitarist, so I don't think that ego is a prerequisite. Something that is required is the ABILITY TO PLAY GUITAR WELL.
