Hi all...my first post.

For my 40th birthday I got my boss to bring me back a Gibbo acoustic from the USA (I live in OZ)

I have owned a Taylor 410 that I bought from new in 1993 and I know every bump and scratch is mine...or most of em anyways but have always had a major lust for a Gibson acoustic.

The brief was any late 60's early 70's Gibby, Hummingbird, Dove, 45, anything really as long as it sounded good and wasn't hideously expensive!

He choose me (God bless him) an early 70's J45 with dreadnaught shape (no slope shoulders).

I love it, sounds like all those Stones recordings I love so much and has sparked up my songwriting again.

Does it sound better than the Taylor...nope just different....

Anyways I wrote to Gibson re the serial number and they said between 70 and 72....I guess there is no real way to tell the exact year but thought I'd post here in case somebody knows better.....number is 928491...most appreciated..

It's my second Gibson other is a 1990 les paul standard...I've tried many other guitars but Gibbos are my first love and the guitar that I am the most comfortable with..

Cheers to you!

Hi Goneshooting and welcome to the forum.

Got any pictures?

There's 1 or 2 here who have square shouldered J45s from that era and many who will help you out with the serial number. Not me, I have no clue!

One of my all time guitar heros Paul Weller plays a square shouldered J45 from the 70s too. You're in good company there mate!

I've got some photos but not on a hosted site, I guess thats how you do it? I'll try and work it out and stick some up...she's not a pretty guitar, same kind of burst as a bird of the same era with a big clubby neck and tortoise scratch plate...

Thanks for the response, I didn't know that Paul Weller played one....he is fantastic! I notice you have the 801 album as your pic...perchance a Roxy fan???

Cheers....

Love to see the photos - we're all suckers for some vintage Gibson porn! Try photobucket (if you can put up with the bombardment of adverts) but there are others. My good friend Johnt has a Square shouldered J45 too.

Yes - I was a huge Roxy Music fan in the 70s. Not so much the later stuff but Brian Ferry made some great records after. Also the offshoots, particularly Brian Eno and Phil Manzanera. That 801 Live album is sheer class.

I wondered when someone would spot it!

If you want to hear PW's J45, get Days of Speed - essentially a solo acoustic live album with versions of all the old favourites. A very inspiring album.

I have had one since 1976. Had a neck reset and fret job done by Gibson repair shop in 06'. I would like to think it sounds as good as any from that era. They have their own sound much like the Stones acoustic stuff. Wouldn't ever consider getting rid of it.
