(the 80s) when they modified lots of guitars (80= prior to the "signature guitar" madness/extravaganza we are leaving in now) as to the first comment, ive seen a lot of studio videos of metallica where the producer would just take the guitar from hammet and start recording solos as the wimp wasnt up to the task.
