Help Required - Supernova, Dot, Sheaton II

Recommended Posts

Hello all, firstly a quick intro..... My name is Scott, I'm 32 from Swindon in the UK & new here. So hi :)/ :-k/ :D/

I currently own an Epiphone SG G400 which I love, but the other day I stumbled across pictures of the Supernova in Man City blue which I believe was discontinued last year. Well firstly I want one (in blue, not union jack)! Have searched high & low and can't find one..... There is one on eBay in the US but has damage on the headstock. Does anyone know where I can find one or do I just need to keep my eyes on ebay?

Ok that said, I have a few questions. firstly what model was it based on & what are the main differences over standard? I'm guessing it's based on the Dot, but in all pictures the arch looks a lot more pronounced on the Supernova than the Dot. I know the pickup selector is relocated, the colour obviously is different, different inlays, pick guard.... Are the pickups different!? & finally how much did it sell for in the UK. Oh & with these models do we pay so much more because they are signature models or are they genuinely better!?

& then the Dot & Sheraton II look almost the same..... Different finish, headstock & inlays but is that it?!

I'm sorry for all of the questions, but I'm hoping you guys can help enlighten me.

Many thanks.

I'm sure others can fill you in better-

Supernova = thicker mahogany neck, different toggle switch location, same pickups, Noel Gallagher endorsement, cool finish/aesthetics Technically, it's "sort of" based on the Sheraton, since that's what Noel used at teh time from Epiphone, but it's really not a sheraton. All of these are based loosely on the 335, the dot/sheraton very closely.

Sheraton = nicer aesthetics than dot (inlays, binding), different neck (same specs, different construction, I believe), same pickups.

Dot = same pickups, more basic styling, can get Dot Deluxe at times if you prefer a more refined look.

There may be a few other differences as well- anyone else?

I have a Dot and a couple(!) of supernovas and I would choose the latter everyday should the choice be there. I have never been able to put my finger on it but they just 'feel' so much better. The inlays, switch position and finishes all appeal to me more than the dot. Don't get me wrong the dot is awesome and I use it all the time, but that is only because my supernovas are sleeping!!

I actually thought the pick-ups were different on the supernovas but I stand corrected if they are the same.

Awww Smokey thats just so cruel! I really want the blue Supernova that you have, and you saying that it feels better has just made things worse! I have to find one now........

There is one on eBay in the States but it has a slightly damaged headstock..... Im not sure if this is something that I could get restored, or more worryingly whether it could be hiding something more serious if it had been dropped or something?

Wanna sell me your blue one!? :)

... But if i sell you the blue one i wouldn't have the complete set of 5!!!

There are normally plenty knocking around ebay in the UK, especially the blue and union jack ones as they had the longest run. At the moment i would say anything from £400 - £500 would be a good price and that would be for a good example (ie no damage). Try and get one with the original scratchplate that contains the signature, there are instances where the plate is missing but i feel this takes from the finish slightly.

There are a few 'nova haters on here who will tell you its nothing more than a glorified dot and the price will only go down in time, I disagree ecpecially as oasis have a new album and tour this year so their popularity remains.

Don't rush and bide your time!!

According to Epi, they're standard Epi humbuckers, but I can't say whether they're the Alnico classic or Classic Plus (or some predecessor). But I will also add that the humbuckers that came on my '96 les paul and my '06 Dot are nothing alike in sound (even when installed in the same guitar)...it's pretty clear Epi changed schematics or manufacturers sometime over that decade, so it's hard to really call them the same pickups, too. the '06 P'ups are brighter with more clarity and a fuller tone.

So maybe they're different than older/newer epis- I dont' really know. Plus, I think the same pickups sound widely different on different guitars.

I still want a Man blue one as well, but there are SO MANY items on the list to purchase first. (I also can't wait for the new album. I'm told the new label plans to actually promote them actively in the US for the first time since Morning Glory, so I'm hoping for some US tour stops as well).

dots don't have the anti feedback center wood.. sheratons, do.

the supernova took some cosmetics from the riviera, didn't it?

I couldn't find the nova with damage on ebay, probably just england ad.

If it's snapped off, that can be hard to fix. If it's just cracked, much easier, but that depends on how and where, too.

the blue nova is such a clean sharp looking guitar, I wouldn't mind having one.

is the neck deep set like casinos or shallow like sheratons. that upper fret access beckoned to me pretty strongly.

also, I don't know if the nova has a multi piece neck. Which I like a lot.

My sheris old, but still stable.

OK this is your answer. i own all 3. the supernova has a slimmer neck of the three. it is riviera based{it infact is the same neck on the jorma k. riviera.} I like the supernova, then the sherry, then the dot. you cant go wrong with either, but your going to a pay a premium on the supernova, as they have excellent resale value.
