Forget Epi vs. Gibson, how about LP vs. Sheraton

I couldn't care less about having a Gibson, I love my natural Sheraton. But I do have GAS for that Epi Natural LP Custom Plus! The Epi headstock wants that diamond inlay! So my question is what can a LP do that my Sheri can't? I get some great clean and crunch from "Maria" but I've never really spent any time with an LP. So, those of you in the know (and there are quite a few of you guys in this palce).....what am I missing?

I've got both, the LP has lots more sustain and is just HEAVIER in all ways. I don't want to be without either at this point.

I like the warmth and richness of the Sherry that isn't as easily coaxed out of my LP(by me anyway8-[ ). Sherry sounds jazzy too.

Also, I'm a bigger guy so the Sherry just feels better to me.

And of course I can get the Sherry to feedback a lot easier too. There is something to be said for some well placed ear splitting feedback at the right moments, 'specially when you're over that whole jazzy feeling thing. . .

I've only got my humble epi studio for an lp.

but with the same p90s in each, there's a difference.

However, I wouldn't say the lp can do anything the sheri can't.

Or vice versa, except when it come to their individual tones.

They shape notes differently, somehow. You can hear it. You can feel it.

I get so close to the same sustain, I can't even decide which might be greater.

I don't want to call the lp sterile.. but the notes seem to have more control.. a tighter focus.

The sheri is more lively, yet I hate to say that for the same reason as the 'sterile' comment.

It's just not fair because each guitar has plenty of both, but different.

And anyway, what the heck is lively? both have good sounds.. good tone..

a lot of it has to do with how you play, and what you play through, and how you've set it up.

I play straight into my vj with both.

They are different and they are good.

But there you go.. I set them up to sound how they sound.

I guess I'm just babbling along then, unless I take the two to different areas of sound or performance on purpose.

It would be hard to pick one over the other, they both have a sound all their own whether played clean or overdriven. Upper fret access is better on the Sheraton than my LP, I've only had my Sheraton a week but I am impressed with the quality of workmanship. My LP is an Elitist and the quality is excellent I just like the feel of the LP, but I'm getting used to the Sherry. The neck pup on the Sherry does seem a little muddy but I play alot in the middle and bridge positions so thats not a big issue for me. Either one is a great choice.

Here are the obvious:

A Sherry is Bigger in size, but lighter in weight.

Other than that, it really is personal preference. IMO, The neck on a lp is thinner/flatter than the rounded v shape on the sherry..

Some days I play the sherry, some days I play the LP.

As you can see I have both a sherry AND a casino. I just could not make up my mind i guess. They are similar size, but sound different. The sound difference is from the casino's full hollow body to the sherry's semi-hollow body. Obviously, the casino is louder unamplified.

Same difference with the LP: From the sherry's semi-hollowbody to the LP's solid body.

What I'm saying is that they are just different. They both play beautifully. IMO, going from a sherry to a lp is easier than going from a LP to a sherry. Just my 2 cents.

Rainbow I agree with for sure. It isn't that my lp lacks highs.. it's just that the sheri twangs 'em out different. *L*

rpach said .. IMO, The neck on a lp is thinner/flatter than the rounded v shape on the sherry..

but mine are the opposite. the sheri has a very thin flat neck.. the lp is fatter and rounder.

I have to admit I'm getting used to not having that huge lower bout in my ribs.

If epi comes out with a 339 ......
