bluefoxicy
I'm looking at getting into some of the finer ends of building tube amps (love modding up my VJ...), because well, I want to take the VJ design and use it to build a car stereo amplifier box on pure tubes (6L6 or EL34 and 12AX7, one circuit for each channel). I'm looking at two books. One of them is all theory and the other is all existing amps + schematics + explanations. Anyone have any recommendations? The two are: http://www.amazon.com/Building-Valve-Amplifiers-Morgan-Jones/dp/0750656956/ (building valve amps) http://www.amazon.com/Tube-Amp-Book-Deluxe-Revised/dp/0879307676/ (Tube amp book that has tons of schematics)
layboomo
Just a couple of comments....first you might not want to follow guitar amp circuits too closely because that overdriven pushed sound we love for guitars might not be what your looking for in music reproduction. The output transformers and many other parts for true hi-fi applications are usually set up a bit differently for a very linear full range frequency response. The tech section here http://www.aikenamps.com/ is an excellent place to learn.
oldpriest
The tube amp book(by Aspen Pitman) is a great source for original amp schematics and tube tech info along with good pics of old amps....but there are lots of sites on the internet which deal what to use and why as well as pictures etc... much better if you want to build instead of copy. That said, I revert to The tube amp book often just to see what worked back in the day and I know it's a good place to start.
oldpriest
Forgot to mention that The tube amp book also has some old high-fi amp schematics....but times have changed with music reproduction in general and newer info(especially for your project) would be better...IMO
bluefoxicy
Nods. The tube amp book is on a second edition or something and has updated information too, along with explanation of circuits. I just love the tube tone, it works not just for amping my guitar but also for plugging voice through (which doesn't overdrive) and when I found out you amped stuff like CDs through it back in the day (or today for thousands of dollars) I just gawked. It should be hard to overdrive a 6L6 poweramp though.
oldpriest
6L6's can be very clean...I.E. the Fender Super amp. Very clean most of the way up....My friend had an old Super Reverb and it was something to here! Super loud...no pun intended.
bluefoxicy
that should make it good for generic audio equipment then :D
tunghaichuan
that should make it good for generic audio equipment then Nah, don't use a guitar amp as a basis for a hifi amp. Here is a web site that might help: http://www.bonavolta.ch/hobby/en/audio/audioel.htm Here are power amp schematics both SE and PP for various tubes: http://www.bonavolta.ch/hobby/en/audio/audioel.htm#Amps tung
bluefoxicy
tung you're just full of everything aren't you?
bluefoxicy
Also for reference I meant the 6L6 was very good for generic since it stayed clean a good way up. At least, better than an EL84...
