A nostalgic reunion with an old Epi friend

The guy that bought my old '94 Samick Les Paul called today about having his Gibson LP Custom checked over; so I asked him to bring along the old Epi just for fun. I almost regret selling that thing (it was the first Epi I ever bought), it's amazing how much better these are than the ones they make now. Full 2" thick basswood body (actually a tad over 2"), which I prefer as a tonewood over that Phillipine stuff. Current Epi LP's are only 1 7/8" BTW. Anyway I wanted to check out the neck joint so I popped out the neck pickup and sure enough... long tenon. I thought that was the case but I wanted to verify it. Man those Samicks were good. Not Elitist quality but definitely the next best thing. If anyone runs across one of these babies and is wondering whether it's a good buy, I'd absolutely say go for it.

You should ask the guy if you could buy it back.

I wish I still had my first guitar. I would pay a lot of money if I could buy that back. It was a Mosrite Hi-Flier. Just for sentimental value. I still own the second guitar I ever had, but it would be nice to find your first again.

I wish I could buy my Gibson ES 335 back. I was perusing the pictures on my 40th high school renunion site, and found this picture.

That's my old guitar (which cost about US$300 in 1965), played by the former lead guitar player in my 60's garage band. Looks like he's taken good care of it. But I have to admit that my Elitist Casino has a better fit and finish than the 335 did. I would probably get an Elitist Dot if it weren't for the fact that it has...dots....and a stoptail. So, the Sheraton is the closest thing looks-wise.

But, getting back to the thread, my Samick-made Dot is a beaut. It has been 4 long weeks since I took it to the local guitar guy to get P90's put on it. Still not finished(!). That's the problem with having to pay for work up front...once he has my money, he has no incentive to complete the work.

Heh heh. Noooo... Things are fine the way they are. While it's nice to see the ol' Sam, and view her from the objective perspective of the previous owner, I think the Elitist LP and the Monty 'Chelsea' have me covered in the Les Paul department.

I parted with a Gibson ES335 last year that I wish I had kept.

Ain't that always the case? In my life, I've sold an ES 335, an EB-3 bass, a Martin D-35(? the expensive one with the 2-piece rosewood back), and an Epiphone Texan. I regret every last sale, especially in light of how much I sold them for in the late 60's.
