BSAKing
On my Joe Pass, I have been notcing a buzzing/vibration when I play (even unplugged), but not fret buzz. I removed the pickguard and tightened tailpiece screws, then found one stripped screw in the bridge pickup mounting bezel. Removed it - same. That one I will fix - I think I have seen a toothpick and a bit of glue as a solution. I noticed the pickup itself seems to 'wobble' from front to back in the black bezel surround. I stuffed some folded paper between the pup and the bezel and it seems to have disappeared. Now - how to fix properly? Do I have to remove strings and pup and mount and maybe replace standoff springs or something? Has anyone else run into this before?:) TIA, BSA
charlie brown
YES...very common complaint. Usually it has something to do with the bridge...IF you have a ABR type. Other areas of concern have been wiring under the top, vibrating against the top, at certain frequencies, pickup springs, or bezel rattles (as you seem to have already discovered). Tailpieces, the selector switch rattles, sometimes...lots of different causes. Not only on Joe Pass models, but Casino, Riviera, even some of the Sheri's and LP/SG's. And, it's not limited to "Epiphone," either. They can be irritating, and difficult, to track down, too. So...good luck, on your search/solution(s). Oh, and some will take off the pickups (if that's the culprit), and replace the metal springs, with surgical tubing. Very common solution, to that particular problem. layboomo
I have a JP too and my guess is the pickup mounting springs! Get some surgical tubing and use that in place of the springs and I'll bet your noise goes away! I see CB beat me to the punch...well it's still my call too!:)
