taxman
OK, I just got a new amp. An amp that I have dreamt of since I was a kid -- the mythical, magical VOX AC30. (Yes, I am happy.) Now here's the deal. I figured my Strat would sound absolutely perfect through the AC. Now it sounds great (even my $89 Squier sounds unreal in the amp, it really does), but I was surprised to discover that my Casino really fits the amp better than the Strat. What's more, my other Epiphone - the EJ-160 - sounds spectacular through the amp. Is it the P-90 pickup in the Casino that is more in sync with the Vox than the Fender pickups? Completely blown away at how both my Epiphones sound so perfect. When a relatively cheap acoustic like the EJ-160 can sound phenomenal, I tip my hat to Epiphone. I am new to the world of Epiphone and I must say these guitars sure do shine. I have been a Fender guy my whole life (if it has that fancy F on it, I buy it), but I sure am happy I found Epiphone. Future purchases will be the fancy E. Anyone know if they make a fine 12-string acoustic?
pohatu771
As far as I know, the only 12-string Epiphone makes is the DR-212... it's $169. I've never played one, though.
taxman
the only 12-string Epiphone makes is the DR-212... it's $169. Yeah, that's the only one I've found out about. Got great reviews on the net, but I sure would like to try one before I buy a 12 string. Just curious, why Foreman as your avatar?
pohatu771
Old joke... we had a stint where everyone had a certain theme avatar for a day, and then a new one the next. I haven't changed it in a few months. They make the G-1275 - the SG doubleneck, but it has the noticeable additon of a six-string neck, and the lack of a soundhole. Have you ever played a 12-string? I want to like them, but haven't found one that I like yet. I think it has something to do with the chorus strings being above the normal strings... maybe if I switched them, it'd be better. charlie brown
Well, if you love your Epiphones, and it sounds like you do...see if you can find a Riviera 12-string (Elitist)! Damn nice sounding and playing electric 12-string. For acoustic 12-strings, Guild makes some of the finest, available. But, "They ain't cheap!!" Martin and Taylor both make great Acoustic 12-strings, as well...but, again, they're pricey! Washburn makes several Acoustic 12-strings that are far more reasonable, and still have a decent tone. Takamine makes some as well. The Jumbo 12, is really nice. But all acoustic 12-strings have wide fingerboards. Just the nature of the beast! For me, "Rickenbacker" is THE "Electric 12-string!" But, lots of folks don't like their quite narrow fingerboards. But, there are good ways, to make that work to your advantage, too. I haven't seen the "perfect" guitar, for everything...yet! LOL! But...if you can find an Epiphone Elitist Riviera, in great condition, used...it's worth the investment, and would be my very close "second" choice, in an electric 12-string. By the way....Congrats on the Vox AC-30...my band mate has one, and loves it! Cheers, CB
MarkW
A second for the Riviera. They pop up on E-Bay quite often in very good condition. I bought a 6 string Riv that was in perfect condition but 4 years old.
taxman
Thanks for the heads up on the Riviera. Will check that one out for sure when looking to buy.
dbirchett
Not Epiphones and I have not played either but the Agile and Eastman 12 strings have had some nice comments made about them. For Acoustic, I love my Larrivee.
