the new model grovers

Recommended Posts

Since Stewart-McDonald has entered the discussion I'll add this tidbit... They offer a tuner peg drill jig.

This l'il pricey piece of plunder tightens into an existing tuner hole using a cone shaped device on a

bolt to: center, and affix a metal jig aligned to give options for the locational lock screw along with a

table of what manufacturers types go where. I got one of these little gems to repair a headstock on

an Epi whose owner must have been a member of a tuner of the month club. Thing had had so many

types in it, it looked like it was fired on with birdshot. Forget the press or a reamer; somebody had did

this puppy with a power drill and a broken bit. Original holes had to be plugged with dowels and then re-

drilled square, (on a drill-press, reamin' won't do it here folks). After the correct pattern and spacing was

back the jig was employed to drill holes to locate new Spurzels where Grovers were in the beginning.

This was especially handy since we filled the entire back of the headstock and just started from scratch.

I do agree that a reamer will work well: but so many times damage from drilling comes from a lack of

experience and technique. If you back up the hole with flat solid hardwood, use a slower speed with

steady but not heavy pressure, support and secure the area during drilling, and use a new or sharp bit,

the operation can be more precise than a reamer since the bit diameter is a constant. A little more with a

reamer might be a little bit too much resulting in a less that optimum fit. Difficult to do, yes, but it can

happen if one loses patience and doesn't check fit frequently enough. I don't remeber what the jig

cost: but like any Stew-Mac piece it was quality and that's never inexpensive. I mainly got the thing

just cause I knew I'd need all the help I could get trying to rescue this Mossberg massacred lookin'

mess. Worth a look just for the peace of mind.

This will be my last post on this thread................I don't really care WHO advises it, a tapered reamer

leaves a tapered hole........which I would be inclined to raise serious sand about if it were MY guitar.

Attacking it from front, AND back, leaves a nice tight center, and slop on both surfaces.

If this is the way anybody wants it done, FINE........

I've worked with far too much delicate (and sturdy) wood, to even try it that way.

A Spring loaded STRAIGHT reamer......maybe,....... tapered......ummmmmm NO.

Unless the inserts themselves are tapered.

Gosh. Just like me.

Well, back to my 'hacking'.

----------Anyone can selectively google any opinion they want when they don't know thier fubar from a nelson in the ground but want to give someone else marx.

You can figure out' date=' without googling, exactly what meaning I substituted your names for, even though it will probably take you a month.

You really should have taken the time to find this out on your own instead of once again making a complete casinogino of yourself.

The only problem is you actually started to get support for your stupidity..and from people who also might have shown the good sense

to look around.

And of course, you count on that.. people coming to conclusions or forming opinions without making any effort to learn anything at all.

And of course, that's why you're here. To bully people and strut and pose, spreading your ignorant stink from ceiling to floor.

As for Dan.

Some twenty years ago or better I spoke with him via mail when he was hiring an assistant.

Had a band at the time and never followed it up. Wish I had.

Probably be doing it his way.

I have nothing but the utmost respect for him.

and for a LOT of other luthiers, too.

I suggest you do the same.

It's nice of you to show tools and such for drilling original holes such as this link you posted,

http://www.lmii.com/carttwo/HeadSlotJig.htm

which has NOTHING to do with enlarging already existing holes. I would expect you to know the difference between that, but again, hack away...that's what you know how to do.

And you're lucky you didn't get the job with Dan, he certainly would've fired you for poor workmanship. O:)

Use one of those two ugly heads of yours.

It shows a jig..for a headstock.. it's an extension of, an aspect, of the point. Not the point.

It clearly shows a headstock in a jig having applied to it.. not a simple drill bit from a press.. but a damned router.

making the point that you're full of it. Unless you are stupid enough to think a drill press causes more stress than a router!

Man.. you are SUCH a simpleton.

bwahahahaha! bwahahahaha!

think before you post!

the point was made clearly.

You are wrong.

You were wrong from the start.

Many expert luthiers do it the same way I do.

I am not a hack.

You are not an expert.

Dan Erlwine is not the only luthier in the world.

You sought to attack me, and failed.

You look like a fool.

You are a fool.

Everyone knows it.

You did it to yourself.

You should feel ashamed.

You don't.

You don't know how. and probably never will.

You try marx, even when it's been shoved completly up your fubar, to look good.

and you fail even then.

God I love that.

I love that you are soooo stupid you never thought to look at the headstock jig or relate it what we were arguing.

I love that you LOOKED RIGHT AT the big old router being applied and NOT FOR A MOMENT

considered how much more dangerous BY YOUR OWN LOGIC that would be vibration wise compared to a mere

drill press.

I'm serious.

For all the crap you've given me at last we have you painted clearly in your corner.

You have NO OPINION on putting in tuners and don't know or care about it.

You just wanted to nail me..

YOU FAILED.. YOU MADE A FOOL OF YOURSELF.

AND I'M GONNA POINT IT OUT ALL THE TIME, JUST LIKE YOU ATTACK ME ALL THE TIME.

Really, the reality is when it comes to discussing guitars it’s painfully obvious you would be out of your depth in a parking lot puddle.

I honestly don't know what makes you so stupid, but it’s really working. Your posts look like something one would expect out of a 3rd grader....wait I'm sorry for that. That's an insult to 3rd graders everywhere.

TWANG[/quote']Keep talking Wang, someday you'll say something intelligent, the odds are with you.

But…Perhaps your whole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others.

The fact is you dismiss a tried and true proven method of guitar woodworking. Endorsed and approved by world renowned and respected luthier’s for decades. But you…yes you are to be taken seriously? :P

You are the poster child for the word delusional.

Really now, I'd insult you, but you're not bright enough to notice, Go back to drilling out headstock holes to enlarge them. Dan and everyone else are wrong and you are right. After all, it worked a whole staggering 20 times, so it must be the tried and proven method, right?

Say, Bob, what happened in epi forums today.

Well, Sam, there was this kid, Marxy, they call him.

And lo and behold, he was wearing his butt for a necktie!

Gosh, Bob, you don't say!

Sam, it was incredible. He just kept picking his nose and saying 'what's that smell?' over and over.

Gee whiz, Bob! Didn't anyone tell him it was his own butt?

Sam, they were all just too nice, except this one guy, Twang they call him. He pointed it out to Marxy, but

Marxy claimed all knowledge and awareness was his. And that butts couldn't even be worn as neckties because you couldn't tie

a butt.

But, Bob, didn't Marxy realize that was just a metaphor for having his head up his A**, and the stink was just how dumb he was?

No, Sam, Marxy couldn't figure that out. He just kept picking his nose and mumbling 'what's that smell?'. Finally, someone lit a match and,

you know.. metaphor or not.. Marxy exploded right on the spot.

Gee, Bob, seems a shame.

No, Sam. Not really.
