alans056
Haha! Thanks a lot everyone you're great Yeah it's fun... AND SCARY! The shield around the PUP cable is solded to the TOP part of the POT. And the cable inside is solded to the little branch at the bottom. Am I doing it right ? EDIT: The pickups I am trying to install are Gibson 57' Classic. And Yes, they have enough wire to restart everything. My gibson pups have an outer Braided shield, and an inner single conductor, that's it Yes mine too. There the black is just tissue.
animalfarm
The black part I figured out. So, there is NO stranded "bare Wire" inside along wthe the inner conductor wire, then?
alans056
There is just the braided shield, and then tissue, and then the wire inside (well it's several tiny wires together, you know what I mean). Nothing else!
animalfarm
Ok, my checking with the GIBSON site also indicates "Vintage" 2 - conductor. Outer shield, with single inner wire. It would be best to start over when you get a decent soldering iron, remove previous wiring, then clean up the solder areas. The part that conderns me is where it appears to have a big blob of solder between tab 1 and tab 2 on the upper/neck volume knob. Is there a blob there like it looks? Wiring: You should have only 2 connections to make on each volume pot - 1. Neck Volume pot tab 1 (input) - the inner conductor in the pickup wire and the small red jumper wire inside the coming BACK from the tone pot will be soldered to this tab. If you look at the way the wire is connected at the tone pot, you'll see a second braided wire soldered to the back of the Tone Pot - this is used as a ground connection, that second braided wire should also be soldered to the back of the volume pot, and looking at your picture, looks to be in place still. 2. Neck Volume pot, pickup outer shield (ground) - "tin" the shield, "tin" the back of the Volume pot just a bit, then quickly solder the 2 together, just like in your pic. 2. Bridge Volume pot tab 1 (input) - Wiring same as above, but the jumper wire coming back from the tone pot will be white, along with the second braided wire used as ground. (back of this pot looks messy), and I'm still worried about that solder blob I think I see. I can see the white wire on the Tone pot and the braided ground wire still in place. I can also see a small black wire running from the back of the lower pot to the upper pot - this is a ground wire ALSO, and must remain connected to the back of each pot. Turn the volume knobs to ZERO before soldering. Hold the "tinned iron" in place long enough to verify the solder did melt, then pull iron away and hold soldered wires in place for a couple of seconds to allow the solder to cool off a bit and hold connection in place. make any sense? It's a booger the first time, but after replacing a few pups, you'll realize just how easy it actually is.
alans056
Thanks! So I didn't quite understand everything but I am going to get a new soldering iron like you said, and start over. So basically, is this it ? : And do I need to touch any other wires?
animalfarm
basically, yes. 1. don't forget to solder the pup lead AND the wire from the tone pot to tab 1. See how there is a braided wire soldered to the back of the tone pots? (it's alongside the signal wire) That is a Ground, still in place on tone pots, must also be on back of volume pots - if you haven't touched it, DON'T! 2. The outer shield can be soldered to the back of the volume pots wherever is convenient along the shield wire - doesn't have to be at very end. 3. Make sure the black wire I see going from back of volume pot to volume pot is still in place (another ground) - without a complete ground circuit, there will be NO guitar output. 4. Check for melted insulation in other wires you may have accidentally touched with the larger "GUN" style solering iron. If exposed wires make contact where they shouldn't - no output from guitar. You can use electical tape to cover up any melted part... OR REDO connections! (you might save that until you get a bit more skilled!). FUN, FUN, FUN!!!! alans056
Alright thanks a lot! Thats excellent. Would you have any tip on how solding the braided shield to the pot ? It is quite difficult! I tried (picture) cutting it in half and having a little strip to sold on, but it didn't work out very well...
animalfarm
Just "tin" a small section of the braided shield, then tin area on edge/back of pot that you want to attach to. THEN, place small amount of soler on iron chisel tip, hold shield to pot, touch iron to area between the two, solder melts, connection made. I WAS going to post a picture, my computer is dragging/locking up on me, gotta get out and do a restart........... !%$@$^^^@!*%!!!!!
alans056
hmm what do you mean by "tin" the section ? sorry... :/

animalfarm
Ahhhh, Microphonic feedback - Gibby pups are very sensitive. you may be too close to amp and/or turned up too loud. Never mind the 4 wire pups, just go by the "single conductor" diagram.....

dchale
Please help !! There is an awful noise when I play' date=' it's like CRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR and sometimes the sound fades away, and returns I'm having a hard time imagining what CRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR sounds like. Is that a humming sound or a buzz? Does it go away when you touch the strings, bridge or tailpiece? Does it happen when you adjust the volume or tone? Or wiggle the guitar cord? When you say it the sound fades away and returns do you mean just the CRRRRR sound or all sound?
alans056
All the sound. For example now, I have no sound. And I just had minutes ago And the "CRR" is like... I don't know, it's really weird, like KSHHHHH or something... It comes and goes! I checked the wiring, it seems ok. I fiddled with it while playing strings, didn't change anything EDIT: OK So the KSSSHHHH noise appears when I touch the wires of the pickup. "Don't touch them then" Yeah but it still comes up randomly...

They should look smooth and shiny, not all lumpy and gray (cold solder joint). Here's an article with some links to soldering guides: http://www.premierguitar.com/magazine/Issue/2008/Feb/So_You_Want_to_Solder.aspx How many watt soldering iron do you have? I think the hardest thing to get right is the grounds to the back of the pots, it's easy to have a cold solder joint there especially if your iron is too small. alans056
I have a 40w soldering iron. I just made the test with 2 jack cables, and the one I had since I bought my guitar seems to be the cause of the problem. When I shake or fiddle with it, the sound makes a weird noise or stops. And with a new cable (same brand, same reference, thomann sssnake), it doesn't. That is just frikking WEIRD. I NEVER had ANY problem with that cable before! animalfarm
Back causing trouble, I see!!!! You'd be surprised at problems a cable can cause - just fixed one a couple of weeks ago, they do go out/break as they get twisted, pulled, etc. I'm just passing by, DCHALE is knowledgeable, also. from DIY thread: ***Are you using the thin, unshielded git cable that came with your guitar? ***Replace it with a Decent SHIELDED cable FIRST, may solve Hum/Buzz problem! Take apart your "dysfunctional" cable, look at it, resolder the bad wiring connections! You NOW have the TOOLS!!!!!!! Hey DCH!!!!! afternoon! alans056
This forum is fantastic. I learn a huge amount of things every day!! I remember now, a lot of times I have triped over my cable, unplugged it very roughly etc... xD But when I unscrew the head of the cable, it seems OK.
