pickguard for Epiphone Special II

What others have done is to take an Epi LP pickguard, then

"cut a round hole" in the PG where the Vol knob shaft can come

thru, then mount it FLAT on the Git. The VOl knob will cover the

hole you created.

You'll just have to "pre-fit", then carefully make the hole - just

involves a little creativity...

The really CLEAR pic of this is "lost" in the unreachable archives

of the old EPi forum, so this is the best I can do, but you'll get the Idea:

Thanks, animalfarm, that's great! So, an Epi Les Paul pickguard? Just a standard Epi LP? Anything else to know about the "starting pickguard"? Thanks so much!

I just measured the distance between Pup Mounting Rings on my EPI LP,

it's a "wee bit" over 2 and 1/4" - check this against your

Special II pups - I HAD a special II for a project, but sold it

on craigslist to a very happy buyer.

What are the measurements between YOUR pups? Remember, it doesn't have to be

EXACT, and may require a little creativity. If I had even thought about it,

I would have tried the fit just for grins, but I didn't want to cover the

woodgrain I had created:

What a beautiful guitar, animalfarm! I just measured... Yup 2 and 1/4" between the PUP mounting rings. Thanks! I'll give that a try.

3 questions:

1.) Where does one purchase a Epi LP pick guard ?

2.) Will the pick guard need to have cutouts for

the pickups ?

3.) Do i woodscrew the guard to the body or

does the pickup screws hold it or _____ ???

thanks.

No problem - It's something only we "Krauts" would get!

(I'm half German, with a German Girlfriend). She says she makes

"the BEST" spaghetti sauce... uhhhhhhh... NO!!!! She does make "GUT"

sauerkraut, I'll admit, and Cordon Bleu. Yum!

"My hat, it has 3 corners"

"3 corners, has my hat"

"and if it doesn't have 3 corners",

"then @$#%%@ it, it's not my hat!"

My american, mentally challenged take on the original....

Heh. I had no idea you were half German. I'm half Scottish, half Maltese and 100% cheating with Google translator. I cannot speak Gaelic, Maltese or Arabic. For some reason when people meet me they think I'm Jewish.

Sorry about hijacking your thread, SCB!!!!!

It happens, sometimes! But the ORIGINAL thought is not lost!

What are your plans? Forget about the "3 Questions" post - it's just

a smokescreen to disrupt the original train of thought.

Huh? What? Where am I? I've completely forgotten why I came here. Oh, right. A pickguard for the Epi Special II. Yeah, I want to put one on. I think my question is answered well enough -- unless you happen to know which Epi LP pickguard you started with?

Not a smokescreen... all time you spent rippin me, you could have just as easily

answered the questions and be done with it like a normal gentleman. I was on topic.

Well, anyway... to get back on topic....

I think I found the right pickguard to sand down/trim to fit:

All Parts "Black Pickguard for Les Paul". The numbers I see are 713/466-6414 and PG 0800-033. I hope this helps someone some day!

This is my guitar now:

And this is my guitar with the pickguard just resting on top of it:

Now that I have it... I wonder: What is the best tool(s) to do the cutting/trimming/sanding? Any suggestions?

Hey, that looks pretty good!

I would think the best tool would be a dremel with possibly a grinding stone.

  • 2 weeks later...

Looks Good..you know, for a Special [lol]

Seriously, though, job well done!

Thanks, RTH. I think it makes it look a lot better. They ought to put 'em on the Specials to begin with.

Now, to install new tuners... these guys just don't keep it in tune well enough. My work is never done!

I agree. But then they would have to retool the knob placement and charge more for the guard and installation. Oh well. Customizing is fun!

You are probably going to have to drill out the tuning post holes to 10mm to install anything worthwhile. Yours should currently be 8mm.
